Over the last year the subject of broadband speeds has become one that is increasingly prevalent, something that correlates with the amount at which we are using the internet, and even in the last few months here at Zath we have covered issues such as the confusion surrounding broadband speeds, and the amount at which they vary throughout the day.
As access to the internet is so important in so many people’s life the matter of who you choose as your ISP is a big one, and that is why Top10.com came up with the ‘Broadband Awards’ to celebrate the companies that are excelling in the field and to give consumers a better idea as to who to go to when looking for a suitable broadband ISP.
Situated at the Paramount Club at the top of London’s Centre Point building this year’s awards were hosted by Robert Llewellyn who rose to fame as BBC Red Dwarf’s Kryten who handed out the 10 awards in front of a crowd that boasted many of the biggest names in the broadband industry… admittedly perhaps not so well known in the general population, but there you go!
So let’s have a look at the awards and see who came out on top:
Fastest Home Broadband: Virgin Media
Having conducted over 1.5 million tests over the last year Virgin Media broadband proved to be the fastest in the UK with an average download speed of 8.8Mb, a fact that we had in fact already looked at here on Zath within the subject on broadband speed confusion.
Broadband Innovation: BT
The major innovation that BT have implemented (or rather in the process of doing so) that ranked them so highly in the judge’s opinion was ‘BT Infinity’ which is a major rollout of fibre-optic broadband cables that will allow for up to 100Mb broadband speeds possible.
Best Value Mobile Broadband: 3 Mobile
With more of us expecting to be able to access the internet on the move, cheap mobile broadband is a coveted commodity and 3 have won the award for the best value mobile broadband for the second year in a row thanks to their monthly £15 package which allows up to 15GB a month which the judges deemed to be ‘outstanding value for money’.
Fastest Mobile Broadband: Vodafone
If you are not looking for cheapest, you will be looking for the fastest mobile broadband, and that is what Vodafone have won this award for with the highest average download speeds for any UK provider after thousands of tests, again winning it for the second year in a row.
Best Broadband and Home Phone: TalkTalk
With free weekend and evening calls to UK landlines along with cheap international and mobile calls TalkTalk appear to have won this category with ease (for the second year in a row) as the package also comes with ‘super-fast’ 24Mb broadband speeds.
Best Broadband and TV: Sky
As the only provider that specialised in TV before internet the fact that this award goes to Sky Broadband is relatively unsurprising, with the huge variety of TV options (that features Sky HD and 3D) being cited as the main reason for them being given this award.
Best Broadband Customer Benefits: Orange
Orange Wednesdays, which have been around for a while now, is the benefit that has won Orange this award and you can really see why when you can view half-price movies at the local cinema and especially as 2-4-1 pizzas has been added to the package this year!
Best Home Broadband Package: TalkTalk
TalkTalk become the first and only provider to win two awards this year with the ‘Essentials’ home broadband package that offers up to 24Mb broadband speeds as well as a ‘generous’ 40GB download allowance and a ‘market leading’ calls package.
Best Value Home Broadband: Plusnet
Perhaps the least well known company to win an award this year Plusnet have one this award for ‘continued commitment to high quality, low-cost standalone broadband’, and with cheap prices from only £6.49 you can see why they are good value!
Best Customer Rated Home Broadband: O2
Finishing the line-up of all the main providers 02 were clear winners for Best Customer Rated Home Broadband this year for the third time in a row, with an average customer rating of 3.9/5 that stood clear from the rest of the pack.
Alex Buttle from Top10.com said: “The Top10.com Broadband Awards this year show that we have a huge amount to celebrate with UK broadband. 2010 has been the year of super-fast broadband, with providers that have invested heavily in their service really coming out on top with consumers.”
I think it’s worth adding to this that there is really no clear winner in the broadband market, and that the competition is still very close and very even which is exactly how you would want it. Of course if there is something you specifically want then it’s worth having a look around (and these finding may help) but if these best UK broadband provider awards have shown anything, it’s that they are generally pretty even.
