The Secret of Monkey Island franchise is one of my all time favourite gaming series which I started first started playing way back in the day on my trusty Commodore Amiga, the original was such a great game – in between all the floppy disk swaps!
Well now Lucasarts have brought back what must be their premiere adventure gaming franchise in the form of The Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition! The guys over at Lucasarts (many of which played the original and it was a driving force for them wanting to make games) have basically taken the original game, which was admittedly looking very long in the tooth now that it’s almost 20 years old and re-made it for the current generation gaming systems.
The classic Monkey Island adventure gameplay is essentially the same as it was, however we now get high definition graphics, much higher quality sound/music and perhaps best of all, the whole game is now voiced by the same people who did the Curse of Monkey Island sequel.
Not only that though, there’s one other very interesting spin on this classic re-make, due to how they have created this game. They have essentially built on top of the foundations of what was the original game; it means that at any time during the game you can press a button and revert back to the original graphics and sounds — I’m sure this will bring back many great memories for everyone who played the original and will be very interesting to see how it compares to your memory of the game.
These old-style adventure games such as Monkey Island are definitely something I miss in the modern-age of gaming, so it’s great to see such a great game from the past given some real polish for us gamers looking for nostalgia, but I’m sure they’ll also be a whole new audience who can now appreciate it with the release of The Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition.
Just take a look at the videos below, they really show how good this should be, I’m really excited about playing this game, the only decision to make now is do I want to buy it on PC digital download or Xbox Live when it’s released this summer (2009).
However, for us Monkey Island fans, that’s not the only piece of good news, Telltale Games are also releasing a new episodic game, Tales of Monkey Island this summer!
