I never managed to get myself to the cinema to see The Hangover (15), but I’ve finally been able to watch it and it’s a brilliant albeit weird comedy. Whilst watching it, it reminded me a little of ‘Dude Where’s My Car’ in the sense that these guys wake up and can’t remember for the life of them what happened the night before or where their friend Doug is.
The story is about 4 friends going to Vegas on a stag do only for it to end up being a complete nightmare. One of the guys is the groom’s brother-in-law to be and is one of the funniest, if not the funniest, character of the film because some of the stuff he comes out with is beyond weird. He’s a bit simple to put it bluntly. The groom is a normal guy whose out for a laugh, another is the wild one of the bunch and the third is a normal guy who has to lie to his bossy girlfriend about where he’s going because he’s scared of what she’ll do to him.
You get a good idea of the characters at the beginning which sets the rest of the film up nicely. It’s not until they wake up and realise where they are and start to try and put all the pieces together and get Doug back from where ever he is, and get him to his wedding which is only hours away.
Along the way the group find out what they’ve been doing, from stealing Mike Tyson’s tiger, to getting married to a stripper, and getting involved with drug dealers. They even find a baby in their room which leads to some very dodgy scenes which I couldn’t help but laugh my arse off at but felt wrong for doing so (if you’ve seen it, you’ll know exactly what I mean). There is the odd character thrown in the spice things up, such as a very camp Chinese guy who is found locked in the boot of their car, but beats the crap out of them when they open the boot. Heather Graham plays the stripper who marries the guy who’s under the thumb and even Mike Tyson was funny. Obviously he’s not the greatest actor but he did play his part well and I found him to be really funny.
I won’t go into anymore of the film as I don’t want to give away some of the stuff that they do, but it’s definitely worth a watch and during the credits you do get to see pictures of what they actually got up to on their stag do which I did find highly amusing. As for the extras……..well….
I was quite appalled at how little extras there was on the DVD….3 to be precise. One is an outtake reel which is a good 7 minutes long and has some funny stuff on there, another is called ‘Map of Destruction’ which is a tour of where the group have been in Vegas on their stag do and some of the places have a short behind the scenes video about what they did there etc which is fun to know about.
The final one is ‘Three Best Friends song’ which is something near the end that they sing in the car. I found this to be a pointless extra to be honest as most of it’s in the film. I say the extras are bad, but on the other hand I have to ask myself what else could they really put onto a DVD like this? Maybe they could have actually filmed some of their stag do and used that as an extra which would have been great fun to see.
Overall I found The Hangover to be a funny film and I did enjoy it. But…..from what I saw on the trailer I thought it was going to be much funnier. If you’re wondering which version to go for, Blu-Ray or DVD, I’d go for the Blu-Ray edition as there’s more features and the rating goes up to an 18 as it’s the extended cut which I’d love to see as some of the stuff in this was bad enough, so God only knows what’s on the Blu-Ray version.

Danny ‘Ender’ Martin has been part of the Zath team from pretty much the very beginning since he met Zath himself at Leeds Met University whilst studying Business IT. He’s an avid gamer and a big film buff. Danny graduated from the University of Bradford with a degree in Computer Animation and SFX and now currently works at one of the biggest UK games developers, which will hopefully see some of his ideas hit the gaming world.
