The RBS 6 Nations Rugby Championship is now well and truly underway and now thanks to their collection of apps for various platforms, you can keep up-to-date with the very latest team news and live scores whichever of the popular smartphones or tablets you might have. For the purposes of this review, I’ve been testing out different versions of the app, iOS (on iPad) and Android (on Samsung Galaxy S3).
However, in addition to just doing the usual job of providing live game information and news between games with their standard app, the RBS 6 Nations Live Challenge App takes watching the live game on TV to a whole more interactive experience!
Not only are you playing along answering rugby-related multiple-choice questions about the teams and players involved in the game, but also using your experienced judgement/guesswork to predict what will happen next at certain game events such as whereabouts a ball will be kicked to, will penalties or tries be scored and such.
You accumulate points during the course of the match and tournament as a whole, you can see how you rank compared to all other players and/or your friends (via Facebook Connect integration), and ultimately your points could be worth prizes, as you can even win the match ball from the game you’re watching should you accumulate the most points. There are also more traditional raffle-style competitions that you can participate in, if like me your rugby knowledge is somewhat lacking and you fancy trying your luck to win some prizes!
Also, add Twitter functionality into the app and you’ve got the complete single app that you’ll need while watching any of the live 6 Nations rugby games.
I tested out the Live Challenge App on my iPad and Samsung Galaxy S3 during the recent England v Ireland match and can honestly say I felt this kind of interactive app really does add something to the experience of watching live sport and makes it even more of an event! I remember seeing interactive TV concepts back in the 90s and was disappointed we never really saw them, but now finally we’re seeing these concepts fully realised! The 13-year-old in me is very pleased!
Now if only more live events, especially sports would follow suit and do more things like this, then it would be great, I’m looking at the likes of you Formula 1, FA Premiership, FIFA World Cup etc.
The RBS 6 Nations Live Challenge App is available on the usual iOS and Android platforms for your mobile device of choice, make sure you have it installed for the next 6 Nations game! Also, don’t forget you can keep up-to-date with all the latest rugby news, post-match analysis and video highlights between the tournament games using the standard Official RBS 6 Nations App.
Finally, to get an idea of the kind of fun you can have with your friends, check out this video of England players; Joe Marler, Dylan Hartley & Lee Dickson playing a very special 6 Nations Live Challenge…
