The hotly anticipated, much-discussed and sort of exciting Project Canvas is now on it’s way to market under a new name. The new set-top box offering the best the UK has to offer in Internet TV has now been confirmed and is to be named YouView.
The necessity for an extra set-top box may be a little off putting to some, with many calling for it to be integrated fully into your TV set, however the functionality it brings is much greater than that of a standard or HD Freeview set top box alone.
So what is YouView? Well, we haven’t really covered much on the topic of Project Canvas before here on Zath, mostly because there was nothing concrete to report, however now we have the full story I feel it’s now time to share the love of IPTV on a set top box.
YouView is a joint venture between the five main TV channels and the biggest ISP’s in the UK: BBC, ITV, C4, Five, TalkTalk and BT to name a few. The aim of the project is to allow an open viewing experience for customers, rather than the restrictive services currently offered and adopted into the majority of homes not only in the UK, but also all over the world.
In terms of functionality, YouView will allow you to watch Freeview as you would before, in addition to a host of catch-up TV and on-demand services such as the new BBC iPlayer. Plus, you’ll also be able to pause and rewind live TV as you have been able to with various other TV services, such as Sky+ HD and Virgin Media HD.
With some of the most influential backers in media, such as Richard Branson and Rupert Murdoch, love them or hate them, they are sure to seriously cause concern for the BBC and co. who are gunning to make this a success, especially after Kangaroo TV got blocked by the competition commission.
There is no certain price point yet for the hardware as yet, and no concrete release date, but it is expected to be within the first half of next year, which isn’t long to wait to get your grubby mitts on YouView. However, it is a way after the planned release for the Boxee Box and of course, the new Apple TV – surely you’ve got to ask the question, just how many boxes do you want underneath, beside or above your TV?
So if you’ve been following Project Canvas’ progression over the past few months and it’s journey to becoming YouView, we would love to hear your opinions on the matter. Do you think it will really be a success and perhaps even overthrow the traditional leaders in the TV market?
Is IPTV really the future? Will it simply be killed off by Apple TV or the Boxee Box? Anyway, whatever you think let us know in the comments section below.
