Oh look! Yet another Nintendo DS has been announced. This time it’s the Nintendo 3DS, I think that takes the total count to about 43 now doesn’t it?!
I mentioned a while back that there were rumours of a new DS which could possibly use NVIDIA’s Tegra processor and be the first Nintendo DS to feature motion sensors included, well this could be it. The new Nintendo 3DS will be unveiled at E3 in June this year.
There aren’t really many specifics on the 3DS but it will play 3D games without the need to fashion some very fetching 3D glasses. It will also be backwards compatible with DS and DSi software and so it bloody should be.
The Nintendo DSi XL has only just been released and another DS is unveiled……..where have I seen that before? Somewhere in my head, I’m thinking that’s very wrong of Nintendo and sneaky beyond belief.
Had they mentioned this before the XL was released, maybe a lot of people who purchased the hormone injected DS will have held off for a while to get their hands on a 3D version of the immensely popular DS. But of course, Nintendo will be doing it for the big pile of money that comes flooding in.
Obviously this time around, the DS won’t just have bigger things stuck on it, but there’s the possibility of improved graphics to go along with the 3D element of the 3DS, so it will be a welcome change and it will “succeed” the DS series. The Nintendo 3DS release date is apparently set to be ‘before March 2011 in Japan’, so who knows what that will translate to in reality and when we might see it outside of Japan.
I myself have a DS Lite and I love it. Although I have a PSP too, I find myself buying more DS games over what’s available on the PSP. Will there be another DSi v PSP war? So when the 3DS is released I just might “accidentally” drop my DS in the toilet which will mean I can justify to the Mrs why I’m buying the new Nintendo 3DS.
3D really is taking off fast. With the announcement of Sky 3D, 3D ready TV’s and games like Batman: Arkham Asylum re-released in 3D, I think there’s going to be a massive 3D boom in the coming year. This is just the beginning.
What do you think? Will the Nintendo 3DS be worth the upgrade or happy with the DS you have? Let us know in the comments below.
