Despite being able to use a screen saver as a wallpaper relatively easily if you’re using Windows, things aren’t quite as simple for users of Mac OS X. My Living Desktop aims not only to make this process simpler, but also give you an array of stunning videos to use as your background on the Mac. From development company Amuse inc, it costs just shy of $35 USD for a license, but is it worth it, or is it overrated compared to other applications?
Once you’ve downloaded My Living Desktop, you’ll have to go through an installation process as unfortunately it isn’t as simple as drag and drop for installation. Despite this, installation shouldn’t take too long to complete, and you’ll be up and running in under a minute.
Once you have the application installed, using it is as simple as digging around in system preferences a little. If you open up system preferences, and go to the “Desktop & Screen Saver” option available, you can then continue as if you were selecting a new screen saver. Go right to the bottom of your screen savers list, and under “Others”, you will see an option to use My Living Desktop!
Of course, the principal aim of My Living Desktop is to enable you to view animated wallpapers in the form of video backgrounds, but it doesn’t just stick a video on your desktop and stop there. With video playing in the background (and audio too), it is bound to be using more CPU cycles than normal, so it’s important that you aren’t using it unnecessarily when using other CPU intensive applications, such as Adobe’s creative suite or a video game.
Fortunately, the developers thought of this, and have you covered. In the settings of My Living Desktop, you can choose to automatically deactivate the video wallpaper under certain circumstances, so if you have a certain application running on your Mac (Photoshop, or Steam for example) the video will discontinue and let your application run at 100% performance.
After installation, My Living Desktop will also download another selection of video wallpapers, in addition to the default “Serene Saver” that comes with the application. There is a large selection of scenes to choose from, so you’re unlikely to be stuck for content at any point.
To change the scene that you’re currently watching couldn’t be much simpler. Again, you’ll need to head in to the settings of My Living Desktop, and select the “Scenes” tab. Here, you’ll find a list of all the available scenes that are installed. You can also choose to show only one scene, or to cycle through the scenes at a given period of time, whether it’s every half an hour or every day.
If you’re looking to spice up your Mac desktop with an animated wallpaper, My Living Desktop may be worth considering. Whether it’s worth the $35 asking price is up to you to decide, there are an awful lot of still desktops available out there! If you do want to give it a go, you can download a trial and use it for 10 days free of charge.
