YouTube Upload Limits Increased

youtube-logoYou don’t need me to tell you how big YouTube is – and with millions of hours worth of videos being uploaded every day it’s only getting bigger, and with the relatively recent introduction of high definition (HD) videos the file sizes are also following the trend of increasing in side.

So all those of you out there that like to use your HD recording ability and sharing it with the world will be glad to know that YouTube have decided to increase their upload limit allowing people to upload up to 2GB worth of video (doubling the previous 1GB maximum figure).

However as nice as this may be a few people are still mystified as to why they have bothered, most notably some of the old timers who remember when they had to manage with just 100 megabytes. They claim that suitable encoding will easily keep any video within the 1GB limit, if not less, and that this is just encouraging people to be lazy with their videos.

True as that may be it isn’t really that much of a disadvantage to the average user and it merely goes to highlight the way in which technology has moved on and the reasons behind this decision. As more people are uploading HD videos there is a greater need to accommodate for the more ‘amateur’ users, but also to account for the fact that more people now upload direct from their cameras, so would not have the capacity to compress them at all.

They’ve also added the ability to share links that go directly to the HD version, rather than the ‘normal’ quality one and having to find it from there, but haven’t touched the limit on the length of videos (which remains at 11 mins).

The reasons for the retention of the 11 min limit are fairly obvious, and include a particularly relevant copyright related one – by not allowing standard users to upload hours of video they have a simple way of making life that little bit more awkward for people trying to upload whole films or TV series, how it does rather limit the talents of certain independent film-makers who make short-films that are perhaps forced into being released in several parts, such as the Escape From City 17 – Half Life 2 Video series.

So, YouTube continues to be at the top of the class and will continue to be so for the foreseeable future, and with the continuous improvements it, like its search engine owner, will be hard to catch up. In the meantime we’ll leave you with this quick comparison – the first is the prvious best embedded YouTube video, with the second now showing the increased video size and quality – I’m sure you’ll agree it’s much better to watch!

Well, expanding the upload size limit is certainly a good thing, one hopes that they do have the capacity for such a change. i.e. the needed disk space for that growth. they should remove the 11 minute limit though, at least for well-behaving users. For anyone who would like to keep the video, you can use VDownoader, get it from here: http://vdownloader.com/

That’s a good point Roger, I’d rather they extend the 11 minute limit for “decent/good users” – there’s a lot of people out there making podcasts that are easily over 11 minutes long.
