Xbox 360 Now Less Than £100
With the growing economic gloom and redundancies galore we are well overdue some good news and our good friends at Zavvi have helped us into a happier Christmas by dropping the price of the Xbox 360 to below the £100 mark. Admittedly it is just by one penny (the price tag now reads £99.99) but it is still a £30 drop on the previous £129 price, which itself was a substantial drop on the original release price.
There are many things that you could read from this, and many conclusions to be drawn, so lets start as high up the hierarchy as we can, with Microsoft. This price drop is similar to those that you often see at this time of year as manufacturers make a desperate attempt to ship as many failing products as they can; but the cheap Xbox 360 is most definitely not failing and over the Christmas period has probably out sold its nearest rival the PS3.
So could it be that the seller is failing? That is probably as major contributory factor as recent news has implied that Zavvi are in financial trouble and this could be a symptom of a dying company. This is probably also another attack on the amazingly expensive PS3, as Sony still refuses to cut prices rendering them vulnerable to the volatile market as people go for the cheaper option this Christmas.

This isn’t the first time that the console has ventured this low – a few months back Sainsburys had it at that price for a limited time – but this time expect to see more of a high street price war as stores get more desperate. Admittedly this isn’t quite as good as it sounds, the £99 is only for the basic ‘Arcade pack’ which although includes a wireless controller and HDMI connection it doesn’t have a hard drive meaning you will have to buy a separate one. Obviously the other models have also sunk in price, with the Premium and Elite versions priced at £130 and £150 respectively, the lowest that they have ever been.
Obviously this is great for the consumer, who can now benefit from Microsoft milking their price advantage with cheap consoles in the final run up to Christmas. However you will need to get in quick: expect stock to be gone very quickly, and there is no official news yet as to how permanent this price drop will be (although speculation is rife that it is). Oh and it’s also not available on the internet so you will have to get your self down to a store to cash in on this.
So, bad news for Sony and good news for everyone else (except for the jealous Xbox 360 faithfulls who forked out £300 for it originally) and even Wii sales may dip as the price puts of some of the casual gamers it is aimed as. In fact, when you can get 2.7 360s for the same price as a PS3, expect to see a price cut fairly soon!
