Windows 7 Released, Time For Windows 8 Rumours!
It’s now been over a month since the successful release of Windows 7. So what can we expect from Microsoft in their next OS? That is the question! Well at this point we can only assume it’ll be known as Windows 8 for the time being at least, perhaps it’ll maintain the same simplicity and eventually be released as such. Recent reports suggest that work on Windows 8 will properly kick off in July next year, with release being 2012, according to Microsoft Kitchen’s roadmap (see image below).
Most of us will have seen the TV advertising campaign from Microsoft regarding how several different people claim that ‘Windows 7 was my idea’. So we would like to know, if Windows 8 was your idea, what would you include?
This is not a preview article as there really isn’t much to go on now other than rumours. One particular rumour caught my eye though, and that is that the next OS will be 128-bit! Does this indicate the plans of Intel and AMD? After all, there would be no point releasing an OS that isn’t supported by the hardware. Also, does this mean that for the year following the release, we will be battling with incompatible software as we did when 64-bit first became popular? As I said, this is only rumour. Nothing is set in stone and it already possibly looks like the Windows 8 128-bit rumours were fake!
Other rumours regarding smaller tweaks include a new file compression format, .TLZ, which will dramatically decrease the time taken to return from hibernation. Something which may seem insignificant when we’re talking 3 or 4 years until the release, but over time these small rumours mount up and we are left dribbling with excitement prior to release as we were with Windows 7 not so long ago.

So what exactly does this release mean for Microsoft? Is it the end of the ever-increasingly outdated XP? Personally, although XP still has certain functionality that is occasionally useful, to put it simply, I’m bored of it. It seems as though it’s been staring me in the face for a lifetime. However, we all have our preferences so let us know what you think? Has XP already been knocked off its perch by Windows 7? Or are you waiting for a more dramatic change? Perhaps a complete re-write of the OS, which seems very unlikely when you consider that the backbone of Windows is now decades old.
It is extremely early to be getting excited over possibilities for Windows 8 as it is purely rumour. Some seem to be more credible than others at this point, but it’s interesting to see what people want with Windows. I’m sure there are some things that you’ve had on your Windows wish list for years, but they never deliver. Or maybe Windows 7 is the basis for something much more. 7 seems to have taken PC’s by storm since its release in October and maybe that means that without major revolution in 8, sales may not be as high.
I think it’s fair to say that we have reason to get excited for this after Windows 7’s success. Indeed it was, the most pre-ordered item ever on Amazon.co.uk, over-taking Harry Potter DVD’s in the run up to release, although that may have been quickly pushed aside by the recent release of Call of Duty 6: Modern Warfare 2!
Personally, I am content with Windows 7 for the time being. More than content actually, I’m happy with it, extremely. So what do you think? Can Microsoft take back the market share they’ve lost over the last few years? Or what about Mac OS 11? Hmmm…

Windows8sp0 in 2012. Then perhaps W8sp3 in 2015 might be worth a try?
Relax, i’m just kidding. I’m upgrading to Linux when i’m done with XP. I’m done
with Vista/7/8 bloat.
