Windows 7 – Cheap Student Offer Price (UK)

windows-7-boxesYou may have seen our article on the special price offer for pre-ordering Windows 7, at the time I jumped at the chance to get myself a discounted price, and bagged a copy from Amazon for £45. Great, right? Well, I thought so at the time; I can’t remember Windows ever being so cheap, even if this is the year of cheap operating systems… (£23 for Snow Leopard!) That is, until I came across yet another offer for Windows 7.

If you’re a student, you can buy Windows 7 for just £30 from October 1st from Microsoft, and the offer is valid until 3rd January 2010. Also, the price is the same for both Windows 7 Home Premium and Professional. Home Premium is regularly priced at £79.99, and Professional at £189.99. The catch? You need a valid college or university e-mail address, and “a PC that is currently running a genuine copy of Windows Vista or Windows XP and can run Windows 7”.

So why the change of heart from arguably one of the most money driven companies in the world? Well, I can think of 2 main reasons… Firstly, Vista. Whether or not you agree with the criticism it’s received since its release, the average consumer doesn’t want to go near it. I worked in a local computer store for a while, and the thing I heard the most when people wanted a new computer was “I don’t want that bloody Vista”. Secondly, Snow Leopard. Due to Vista, Apple have been grabbing quite a bit of media attention over the past few years, especially after the release of Leopard. When Snow Leopard was announced at the price of $30/£25, Microsoft couldn’t charge over the odds for 7, especially in the economic climate.

I’ll admit I was slightly annoyed at the $1/£1 exchange rate from Microsoft (the same offer is $30 in the US) but whether Windows 7 is just Vista with a new theme or not – and from the Windows 7 RC I’d say not – I’m willing to try it out for £30!
