Windows 7 Beta Released
I’ve just found out that you’ll be able to get your hands on the new, latest (7th) version of Windows – Windows 7 this Friday (9th January 2009) when the Windows 7 Beta is released.
I’ve been looking around for the specifications of Windows 7 but to no avail yet. But I did find a site that commented on running Windows 7 comfortably on “2.8GHz Pentium 4, which only has an 80GB IDE hard disk and 512MB of RAM”.
However, apparently you can only upgrade to the Beta if you have Vista SP1. So anyone with XP, like myself can’t upgrade.
Although I have XP on my computer, I do have a copy of Vista, but haven’t installed it. But even if I did install Vista on my computer, I don’t know whether I’ll be installing Windows 7 because of all the problems there was with Vista on its launch (and still has). If I had a new computer to play around with then I would, but I don’t want to be installing it and find that some of my programmes don’t run on Windows 7 Beta.
Don’t get me wrong, I am intrigued and am tempted to install it when the Beta becomes available, but because of errors on Vista, I’m slightly cautious of Microsoft’s new OS.
From the pictures that I’ve seen, it does look almost identical to Vista, but Microsoft have listened to people’s feedback on Vista and made amendments accordingly, which is good as they are listening to customers and giving them what they want.
But don’t be in a rush to install Windows 7 because it is just a Beta version, so there may still be a few speed bumps in the software.
Are you going to be installing the Windows 7 Beta release? If so, you can find it here. What are your thoughts? Let us know.

UPDATE: You can now get the Windows 7 RC download which features a whole host of developments and improvements from this original Windows 7 beta version.

I am crossing my fingers that this will actually be a decent replacement for xp, not the embarrassment that vista was. If it sucks, then it might be xp for life for me!

I’ve managed to get Windows 7 beta installed (quite easily it was actually) and have been having a play around and have to say that I’ve been really impressed by the improvements it makes and also given it is a beta, I have yet to encounter any problems…it reminds me of Google’s never ending beta of Google Mail!

Paul – I’m really liking it, Windows 7 beta really does seem to be fairly robust – I’ve not managed to break it in anyway as yet and I often get niggly bugs and general slowness in using Vista – but none of that with Windows 7 as yet.
The whole thing just seems to be a much better optimised and responsive operating system than Vista is – if it keeps going as well as this, I’ll be very tempted just switch over to Windows 7 as my main system instead of Vista.
