‘Wanted’ Review
Wanted (18)
Cast: James McAvoy, Angelina Jolie, Morgan Freeman, Thomas Kretschmann, Terence Stamp, Kristen Hager, David O’Hara
Director: Timur Bekmambetov
Running Time: 110 minutes
I wasn’t expecting too much from this film, as from the trailer I thought there would be things that were a bit too far fetched, and so the film proved.
The story is about Wesley Gibson (played by McAvoy) who leads a pathetic life, doing the same thing day after day and he hates what he has become. He then finds out that the father who left him when he was a week old, had been murdered and turned out to be one of the best assassins in the world.
Whilst picking up his weekly prescription drugs for his anxiety, he is met by Fox (Jolie) and she tells him about his father and that someone is now out to kill him, and that someone is the same man who killed his father.
Gibson then joins ‘The Fraternity’, a thousand year old assassin guild. He learns who he is and how to become one of the greatest assassins ever so that he can avenge his fathers’ death and kill the man who is out to get him.
One of the best parts of the film is when Gibson is doing his training and he’s trying to do new things that he clearly isn’t comfortable with. The training with the knives is pretty cool, and the first time you see him in the ‘healing bath’ is quite funny too.
Most of the action in the film would have been awesome, had it not been for the annoying camera work, flashing from one thing to another, so fast you can hardly see what’s going on. When the camera work does slow down however, there is some really nice gun fights that make you think, wow!
Towards the end of the film, there is a big story twist that I thought was really good, and it was a shame that the it was a little spoilt by how fast some of the storyline came and went. I think what hindered this film was a few too many cheesy moments that I think can really stop films from being what it could have been. The performances are average at best from Freeman and Jolie, but I thought McAvoy was quite good and plays his part well.
I did enjoy the film and although it wasn’t great, it had the potential to be a great action film, but just didn’t quite deliver.
3 out of 5

I have to say that from the outset of seeing the trailer, I really had my doubts about this film, I thought it looked like “turn up, act on auto-pilot and get paid” kind of film for these movie stars – would that be too unfair?
