Virgin Media Customers To Use Google Mail

virgin-media-logoVirgin Media has today announced that it will be using Google Mail for its customers email service in future.

Virgin Media customers will still have email addresses which end with “@virginmedia.com”, however the actual system will make use of Google Partner Edition Apps – a collection of online apps that companies can use on their domains for improved online services, of which Google Mail is one – this will be the largest deployment of this system Google has done.

This service will initially be a pilot scheme, involving just the next 20,000 new Virgin Media customers, however assuming that proves successful, it will then be rolled out to its whole subscriber base – at no cost to the customer.

Alex Green, executive director of Online for Virgin Media, said: “With email so important in everyday life, we’re delighted to be working with Google and launching a brand new, feature-rich and easy to use email service.”

This will essentially mean that in the case of Virgin Media, their customers will have access to Google Mail and its 7GB of online email storage and be able to make use of Google’s fast webmail interface…presumably they’d also be able to use the recently introduced Google Mail Themes as well!

I think this is a great move by Virgin Media, I’m not currently a customer, however I have been using Google Mail for over two years now and appreciate the benefits that it offers such as a web-based interface, excellent spam filters, threaded email conversations and instant messaging including voice and video chat.

I’ve been looking at perhaps joining them when my current contract is up and by doing things like this, it certainly proves to me that they are moving in the right direction with regards to ISP services and embracing cloud computing and bringing it more to the mainstream user!

Would you consider being a Virgin Media customer now? Would something like this tip the balance in their favour if everything else was equal?

If I had wanted Google Mail, I’d have signed up ages ago. What this really is is yet another cost cutting move from VM. Instead of our own mail servers and platforms they are farming it out to google. Now all our email will be profiled for targeted advertising. While VM get to reuse/sell off all the hardware which once provided our email.
It’s not a bonus or an enhancement, it’s saving VM money and offering less choice to it’s paying customers.

Well I actually like the idea, sure its basically a ploy to save them money but why not? Let them be. Google mail is great!
