Third Generation iPhone Specification Rumours – OLED Display with 17th July Release Date?

iphone-3gWe’ve been following several third generation iPhone rumours for the past few months as like everyone, we’re very keen to see what Apple might have up its sleeve for the next iteration of its successful smartphone.

Engadget has reported on a rumour that it has picked up on via the Wired website saying that the third generation iPhone will feature an OLED display, which would tie in with a rumour that we’ve already reported, it will have a matte black rear casing (without the metal band around the edge of the iPhone which I’d be quite pleased with), a glowing Apple logo similar to on MacBooks (not sure on that one – would that not waste of precious battery power?) and perhaps most importantly a release date of 17th July 2009 which wouldn’t be long after the Palm Pre.

Just like Engadget mention in their article, I’m not entirely sure about these specifications (that you can read in full below), but then some of them seem rather reasonable and would improve the third generation iPhone in the right direction and therefore they seem believable. However, there are just a few things that stand out and just make you wonder if it’s right or not such as the OLED display (are they cheap enough for the iPhone just yet) and the glowing Apple logo?

There’s some useful developments when you look at these supposed specifications, the doubling of storage space, RAM and processor would be useful, an improved camera up to 3.2 megapixel, a 50% increase in battery life, built in compass and turn-by-turn directions all sounds good, but even then, I’m not sure if there’s any “killer features” which make me want to go out and get one to replace my current PAYG iPhone that I’ll have bought 6 months previously. Also where are the other features that have been rumoured such as the iPhone front-facing camera?

Do you believe these potential third generation iPhone specifications and would they be enough to make you stick with Apple and get another iPhone instead of other forthcoming options such as the Palm Pre which will be launched on 6th June.

What do you think? Would you be happy with the next iPhone as outlined here or would you expect Apple to have a few more wow features?

  • 32GB and 16GB storage (up from the current 16GB and 8GB models)
  • $199 and $299 price points to be maintained

  • Video-recording and editing capabilities
