The Google Phone, ‘Nexus One’ Coming Soon In 2010!
Without a doubt, the Google Phone, or the ‘Nexus One’ was one of the biggest news stories of December. From the original tweets from Google employees worldwide to pictures and possible release dates, this phone is one you don’t want to miss. The phone was given to Google employees on December 10th and right now, most of what we know is rumour-based, although we’re looking at some pretty nice specs, including a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, a 3.7” AMOLED display and a 5 megapixel camera.
The main question that remains is when are we going to get our hands on this thing? From what we know, it’s thought that North America is going to be able to purchase the Google Phone in January, and us folks in Europe are going to have to wait until April for the pleasure, although that may not be a bad thing, as it will give Google a chance to issue a few updates and iron out some inevitable release bugs!
Considering that the Nexus One (or whatever it will eventually be called upon final release) will be in direct competition with Apple’s iPhone and other Android devices too, it’s bound to have some killer features we don’t know about, but other than speculation nothing solid is known about the final release. A few people have got their hands on the device in the run up to the holidays though, one of which reported the phone to have some rather nice sounding tech…
As far as battery life goes, hopefully we won’t be looking at a few hours of intensive use before a recharge is needed (iPhone anyone?) but the Nexus One’s battery capacity is a reported 1400 mAh, so you shouldn’t be expecting your device to last a few days on the road without a recharge…
If, like me, you’re a fan of HTC’s sense interface for their Android devices, you’ll be glad to know that the home screen is split into 5 panes, offering multiple functionality without having too many things going on in one screen. This is a feature of Android I love, as I find it a lot easier to manage my various applications and widgets when using an Android device compared to the iPhone. Oh, and one last thing – it’s incredibly fast! Whether this is down to software or the snapdragon processor we don’t know, but a major complaint over Android since its release has been the laggy interface, so hopefully these problems have been solved!

There have been many debates over whether a Google Phone is a good thing for the market and the Android OS since word spread of the Nexus One, and the way Google is creating a hardware specific Android OS for its own device could be viewed in a few ways…
It’s very Apple-esque of Google to pull such a move and I think it’s a good one in terms of the features available on this handset, but does that mean that other Android phones (such as LG’s GW620 we recently previewed) will be lacking features of the Google Phone? Maybe Android won’t be entirely open source at all…
We’ve been led to believe that the Android we know isn’t the Android that Google have in mind – not for their devices anyway. Another concern is the co-operation of companies producing Android sets, as until now, Google hasn’t competed directly in the smartphone market, but they may utilise some features that other companies won’t see… One thing’s certain, we’ll be getting these and other questions answered quite soon!
UPDATE: The Nexus One (Google Phone) has now officially been announced!
UPDATE 2: I’ve now managed to get myself a “Google Phone” and you can read what I think to it in my Nexus One Review!
