Google Nexus One Review (UK)

February 15, 2010

Google’s new ‘superphone’, the Nexus One, has been the topic of many conversations since its release a day before CES began in January. Released subsidised in the US, and also available unlocked to the UK, Singapore and Hong Kong from Google directly, it comes packed with a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 512MB RAM and a 5MP camera (more on that later on).

Shipping and Initial Setup

The cost of the phone from Google is $529, although you’ll also have to consider international shipping costs of $29.65. DHL’s tracking service was great to have when biting my nails to see where my phone was, although it took an extra day to arrive after landing in the UK due to a shipping mix up – it was destined for Gatwick instead of Manchester, but I was just grateful that my Nexus One didn’t end up in Uganda

O2 Testing 4G Mobile Broadband Network (UK)

February 7, 2010

The massive UK mobile phone and broadband network of O2, along with telecommunications provider Huawei, have uploaded a video onto YouTube showing the next generation of mobile broadband, which is commonly known as 4G.

The video showed a test of the connection involving activities such as streaming high definition video over the web. The test showed speed results of just 8Mbps, much less than the potential 150Mbps that was earlier forecast.

However, this is of course a step in the right direction. At this 8Mb speed we can compare these mobile networks to the average-Joe’s home broadband speed. Other possibilities in the video are real time gaming made available through the 4G networks low latency.

Google’s Nexus One Gets Multi-Touch & Vodafone UK Release Date Soon?

February 2, 2010

Huge news for all you Android fans out there, especially in the States – the Google Nexus One mobile phone received a software update earlier today enabling multitouch on not only the default browser, but also on the Google Maps and Gallery apps.

There was speculation of whether the European version of Google’s latest phone would have multitouch enabled by default like Motorola’s Droid (known as the Motorola Milestone in Europe), but few expected a US software update so soon enabling multitouch.

iphone-on-vodafone-network-2010Another day, another iPhone announcement from a mobile network in the UK – you discuss the possibility of the iPhone on other UK mobile networks, then two announcements come along in as many days!

The day after we found out that we’d be getting iPhones on the Orange network in late 2009, we now find out that Vodafone will also have them available on their network after talks were completed and the deal was signed late last night with Apple.

8 New Vodafone ‘Own Brand’ Mobile Phones

September 4, 2009

vodafone-logoWhilst the world of the Blackberrys and iPhones maybe becoming more popular, the market for the recession stricken is still present and growing so it comes as no surprise that as the demand for cheaper phones grows. Vodafone is just one of the operators that are answering with their own branded phones that are targeting the market that’s less willing to part with hundreds of pounds.

Hoping to build on the figure of the 20 million handsets shipped under their name, Vodafone have now released eight more which vary as much in purpose as they do in looks. As you can imagine they aren’t particularly revolutionary (that is not to say that there aren’t a couple of surprises) but they’re definitely a varied bunch ranging from an entry level touch screen option to both QWERTY and candy bar styles…

Cheap Vodafone Roaming Summer Promotion

July 20, 2009

vodafone-logoVodafone recently announced that they are abolishing of roaming charges for its users this summer with their new Vodafone Passport roaming promotion which is valid in over 35 countries in Europe and also for those visiting Australia and New Zealand too.

This offer means that Vodafone customers who travel to these countries on holiday this summer will be able to benefit from reduced bills. I’m sure this will be most welcome as many people often come home from their holiday and find they have racked up unexpectedly large bills whilst out of the country.

HTC Magic Review

May 11, 2009

htc-magic-vodafone-handset-frontVodafone have released the HTC Magic, but the question is, have they got their exclusive hands on a “magical handset”? Back in February as part of our smartphones series we had a look at the T-Mobile G1 which was the first to have the much hailed Google Android operating system, and although the O/S was impressive the hardware wasn’t; but now it is time for the second wave of Android phones, and the first of them is the HTC Magic.

The Taiwanese telecommunications company have been on the rise recently with the HTC Touch HD, Pro and Diamond all receiving acclaim and success. So who better to have a crack at getting the best out of Android; and let’s face it they couldn’t do any worse could they?

Free SIM Cards

March 22, 2009

sim-cardsA few people have recently asked me about free SIM cards on Pay As You Go (PAYG) for mobile phones, so I thought I should perhaps provide a quick summary of the different options on offer.

Given the current economic climate, everyone is trying to save money wherever they can and I know from experience as when coming towards the end of my current mobile phone contract, I didn’t really want to commit to yet another 18 month contract, especially when I don’t use the included minutes and text messages that I’m paying for now.

Lewis Hamilton And His Blackberry Storm! (Sponsored Post)

February 21, 2009

The Blackberry name is now synonymous with smartphones given their huge popularity with business users that allow them to communicate effectively out of the office and that’s one of the reasons why we’ve recently covered the Blackberry Bold and Blackberry Storm in our recent top smartphones set of reviews.

You’ll no doubt have heard that President Obama is a big fan of his Blackberry mobile phone and has had to really insist on being able to continue using one after taking office as President of the United States – the first President to officially use a mobile phone.

Win a Free Dell Netbook From the Vodafone Live Guy!

November 19, 2008

dell-inspiron-mini-9-netbookVodafone have teamed up with Dell and created quite a novel competition that you can take part in on a daily basis for the duration of this promotion – more on that in a minute, let’s take a look at what is on offer first…

Dell have recently released their first “netbook” onto the market, what’s a netbook? Think of it as a mini-laptop not much bigger than the size of standard paperback book. The Dell Inspiron Mini 9 has come into a market that has been evolving over the past year with various manufacturers throwing their efforts into the ring so to speak – however Dell have hung back and clearly wanted to make sure that their first entry into the netbook market was a good one.

The Dell Inspiron Mini 9 weighs less than a 1kg, features an 8.9” screen, 1GB RAM, runs Windows XP, has wi-fi connectivity and is also the first netbook to feature built-in mobile broadband (up to 7.2Mb/s) – all you have to do is slot the mobile broadband sim card under the battery and you’re good to go – no more plugging a usb adapter in to access the internet over your mobile broadband service!
