Windows 8 ‘Portable Workspace’ To Let You Run Windows From A USB Memory Stick?
April 23, 2011
Since the leaked image of an early Windows 8 build was leaked onto the Internet earlier this week, there have been a steady flow of both rumour and observation from users who decided to illegitimately grab the OS early.
Of course, by no means is it the finished article, but one most interesting feature to have been spotted so far is the ‘Portable Workspace’, which brings to the fore what some of us have been doing for quite a while now.

January 25, 2011
As a reader of Zath you may well of heard of LaCie as they make lots of the products that we cover on here such as mobile external USB hard drives, home media servers and a variety of USB memory sticks such as the MosKeyTo and the XtremKey; on the other hand Christofle specialise in cutlery, napkin rings and other assorted silverware and these two things don’t come together very often.
However the latest release from LaCie is just that: an amalgamation of technology and style, of practicality and looks and of course LaCie and Christofle. It is the LaCie Galet 4GB USB Key and it is the perfect home technology luxury, or at least it is in theory.

December 15, 2010
USB flash drives are becoming as much a part of day-to-day working life as a cup of coffee to get you through the day, and it seems you can get them pretty much anywhere. They’re not quite ten-a-penny, but they’re getting there, so it does take something a little different to make you take notice of USB memory sticks these days.
Thankfully, there are those out there who agree and have set out to do something about it. I give you the USB Flash Drive Heroes. Fashioned in the shape of various funky characters, firstly a penguin, then the festive reindeer, a ninja, a spaceman and an owl.

November 26, 2010
I recently had a bit of a Mac-related disaster when I decided to upgrade one of my Mac OS X computers to Snow Leopard, only to find that the optical drive decided to be stubborn and spit out discs right left and centre. Not one to be defeated, I tried a different approach: USB installation.
MacBook Air owners will know how painful it can be to use remote disc install for various installations, so to be able to install not only applications, but also operating system updates, via USB is a big advantage.
The MacBook Air isn’t the only Mac now without an optical drive either; the Mac Mini server edition sacrifices the optical drive for an additional hard drive.

November 19, 2010
Well nobody could accuse the product designers at LaCie of being lazy that’s for sure. Over the past couple of months they have come up with a wealth of new and innovative products both in terms of quality design (LaCie MosKeyTo USB memory stick) and in some cases durability (LaCie XtremKey USB memory stick).
However, LaCie’s latest effort in the world of portable storage, namely the LaCie FastKey USB 3.0 solid state drive, is all about speed. Raw speed.

The market for hard drives, pen drives and more professional storage solutions is a crowded one, to say the least, and while companies, such as SeaGate, lead the way, I always have a soft spot for LaCie simply because of its innovative products, you just need to look at the LaCie Xtremkey rugged USB memory stick!
LaCie constantly defy the norm in terms of design, and I’m a sucker for a quality looking product, so continuing in that tradition, they now bring us the LaCie MosKeyTo USB Memory Stick. One of the smallest USB flash drives on the market.
The MosKeyTo’s biggest selling point of course is the fact that it protrudes only 6mm from your computer when plugged in, making it comparable in size and looks to Logitech’s wireless mouse ‘nano’ receivers, which you may have seen knocking about.

July 19, 2010
Last week we got wind of a new, slightly ambitious, USB flash drive called the LaCie XtremKey. Now, USB memory sticks have been around for many a year now and millions of us use them every day. However never before has a flash drive paired so much ruggedness with so much beauty.
The LaCie XtremKey, built to US military standards, comes in a small and cylindrical metal design, crafted from Zamac, which is not only good looking when compared to its rugged rivals such as the Patriot XT Boost 150x, but it actually serves a purpose. You see the thick metal casing, which surrounds the flash drive within provides a barrier between your data and the dangers of the outside world. LaCie even claim that the casing provides enough protection so that the XtremKey can withstand the pressure of a 10-ton truck rolling over it.
It does a lot more than that too, for example it can withstand temperatures of both extremes up to 200°C and way down to -50°C which are more fearsome numbers than you are ever likely to incur without ending up fondling your USB flash drive in an oven or industrial freezer, which as far as I can tell is a pretty unlikely eventuality.

May 8, 2010
A while ago we learned of an online update for the Xbox 360 that allows users to read and write data to and from external media via USB. It was an update that was very welcome to say the least for any Xbox user, particularly those who enjoy the fantastic media services offered by Microsoft’s console. Hence, it was only a matter of time before a manufacturer, in this case SanDisk, jumped on the bandwagon and released ‘official’ Xbox 360 USB memory sticks.
“SanDisk has a proven track record of creating high-quality storage solutions,” said Ilan Spillinger, Vice President, Xbox Hardware and Technology, Microsoft. “The Xbox 360 USB Flash Drive by SanDisk provides a great solution for gamers who need portable storage for their Xbox 360 content. Its plug and play simple.”
So I guess some of you are wondering why this drive is actually necessary. Well, even though the capacity of the built in drives has been steadily increasing with every new model since the consoles initial release way back in mid-2005, and the Xbox 360 Elite model is now packing a maximum 250Gb Hard Drive, which I dare say is enough internal storage for the vast majority of 360 owners, for some portability is still a key issue.

December 11, 2009
Some things in life are truly frustrating… Having to use Internet Explorer on a public PC, being without an e-mail client that has all my settings already saved – you get the idea, but what’s the solution? Actually, I think I’ve just found it, and all you need is a USB memory stick!
In case you hadn’t already guessed, I’m talking about the PortableApps platform, which is a completely free download, and allows you to install portable versions of many applications on your USB pen drive so that you can take them with you, and can use them on any PC. When downloading PortableApps, you have three packages to choose from: “Platform Only”, “Suite Light” and “Suite Standard”.

December 8, 2009
I’d seldom care to review an everyday item such as a USB flash drive, but when my old Kingston drive was pulling errors every time I removed it from a Windows PC I suspected that it was about to stop working all together – I was right, the next day the whole thing was a corrupted mess (2 days after I had to buy a new Netgear DGN2000 ADSL wireless router!) so I was on the lookout for another USB pen drive.
When I saw the claims that the Patriot XT Boost (8GB) USB memory stick was “Ultra Fast, Rugged, Waterproof and Shock Resistant” I couldn’t help myself from clicking the little shopping cart in the corner of the screen to try it out for myself… and test those claims in a Gadget Show kind of style! Naturally, the first thing I did after un-boxing it was throw it off the top of my roof. Twice! In case you’re wondering, yes I did throw it pretty hard (which probably isn’t hard at all) and yes, it did survive the fall. Ruggedness? Check.
