Sky Player Now Includes Sky 1 In Channel Line-Up

March 22, 2010

sky-player-logoSo here we are again talking about another advancement in the TV scene and this time it’s online, on-demand TV. Subscribers to Sky’s online ‘Sky Player’ service now have access to Sky 1 in addition to the 27 live channels already available over the service – included in this being able to watch these Sky channels on your PC or though the Xbox 360 service.

Sky 1 is one of the best Sky channels and features many top American shows such as The Simpsons, Lost, Bones, 24, Fringe and many more as well as some other hit shows such as Pineapple Dance Studios and Futurama.

I think it’s fair to say this addition to the service will be extremely popular with many TV enthusiasts as there is already 400 movies on-demand as well as all 4 sports channels. Therefore if you can’t find something worth watching, you’re really not a big fan of TV are you?

Sony Vaio M Series Netbook Announced

March 21, 2010

sony-vaio-m-series-netbook-black-smallSo here we are again, another netbook. This time from Sony which I have to say always makes it a little more intriguing. Described by the company as bringing ‘light, convenient, anytime computing’ and making it easy. The Sony Vaio M series netbook is yet another competitor, in an already overcrowded market. However with Sony, I doubt they’ll allow it to be left behind by its rivals, they may have taken their time to get into the netbook market, but they’ve now had a few models with the likes of the Sony Vaio W Series and Sony Vaio X Series.

I’ve written several articles about the best netbooks in the past, and every time it seems I list the same old spec. In this instance though… it’s no different. Intel Atom Processor (N450) coupled with, you guessed it 1Gb of DDR2 RAM. There’s no NVidia ION here, integrated Intel GMA will suffice to provide 1024×600 resolution on an LED backlit 10.1” display. In this department, it’s hard to be complimentary, but as I have found in the past, there is usually something to catch the eye.

In this case, it’s the aesthetics and portability which make this one a winner. It weighs in at just 1.3Kg which is pretty similar to the latest popular offerings from ASUS. The 10.1” display is a perfect size for those who want a machine capable of surfing the net, checking e-mails and such, as well as one they can just slip into their bag and be on their way. The slim nature of the machine also helps in that department.

New Virgin Media HD V Box – Free, Basic HDTV Service?

March 21, 2010

virgin-media-hd-v-box-set-top-box-smallOK, so over the past week or so we’ve seen quite an advancement in the world of HDTV. First came ITV HD, then came FIVE HD in and amongst a whole host of other new HD offerings from various companies. Well now comes another unveiling that is just another rung on the ladder on Virgin Media’s path to conquering what is essentially, Sky’s monopoly on digital HD broadcasting.

Unveiled earlier in the week was Virgin Media’s HD V box which sits alongside their ‘free’ HD service. Its intentions? To make high definition more affordable and appeal to a wider audience than Sky’s sometimes very costly service. With no monthly fee this sets in good stead in its fight with BSkyB, although you do have to pay for an initial set up fee as well as the box itself.

ZOWIE SWIFT Gaming Mouse Mat Review

March 21, 2010

zowie-swift-black-gaming-mouse-mat-close-up-smallIf you have an incredibly good memory you may remember the ZOWIE GT-F Gaming Mouse Mat which I had the pleasure of reviewing last October and which is still living up to praise that I gave it – but for the last week it has been replaced with the same company’s latest release – the ZOWIE SWIFT plastic gaming surface.

So not only will I be having a look at how the SWIFT fares by itself, but I’ll also be comparing it to GT-F and have a look as to whether the plastic offering will be able to supersede the quality of its cloth predecessor, which will be no mean feat!

But first a bit of background – much like GT-F the SWIFT is part of the SpawN-series and thus has been designed by pro gamer Abdisamad “SpawN” Mohamed, which means it is built around the features that you really need as a gamer: speed, comfort and durability.

McLaren Automotive MP4-12C Road Car Announced

March 19, 2010

mclaren-mp4-12c-high-technology-performance-road-car-launchNot often in the past have super/hyper car manufacturers taken time out to ensure that their cars are not only fast, but economical to boot. If you read our heads up earlier this week regarding the new ‘McLaren Automotive’ performance car’s impending announcement, you may be excited to know that this offering certainly does live up to the hype in almost every aspect.

As Zath is first and foremost, a technology blog, I won’t linger too long discussing what makes it a great car. Other than to say that it certainly will break 200MPH whilst hardly breaking a sweat, it will reach 125MPH in under 10 seconds and it will get back to a standstill in half that time. Suffice to say, it’s really not bad. It also provides petrol heads with an infinite amount of eye candy. A curvaceous body and dazzling paintwork (on the orange display model) make it just as pleasing to look at, as it seems to be to drive.

Dabs.com Live IT & Gadget Show 2010 Review (London)

March 18, 2010

dabs-com-live-technology-gadget-show-logoLast weekend, I attended the Dabs IT & Gadget Show we recently brought you news of, at Wembley Stadium. It was definitely the biggest hoo-ha I’ve seen for an event that was only fairly mediocre, at best. I was forced to book my tickets for this a couple of months in advance because the organisers claimed that the event was in high demand. After doing so, I was then sent a follow-up email (a couple of weeks before the event) asking me to once again confirm my attendance for the event, as well as asking me how many tickets I would like (up to a maximum of four).

A couple of days before the event I received an email reminding me of the high number of attendees, asking me to bring along my ID, otherwise me and my guests would not be permitted entry. Finally, I was asked to print out the ticket to bring along with me. I took three friends along and we turned up at the door expecting a mad rush of people.

Sony Ultra-Compact DSLR Camera Concept Preview

March 18, 2010

sony-ultra-compact-camera-concept-smallHere’s an interesting announcement. Sony have announced a new addition to their ‘alpha’ range of DSLR cameras at the recent PMA 2010 conference. However, this latest installment adds extra functionality, interchangeable lenses and a new user interface.

So what does this mean? Well it fits in with what they call ‘anytime, anywhere’ convenience. For example, when out and about you want a quality camera that will fit snugly inside your bag or perhaps even pocket. On other occasions where photography is a necessity, you may want to attach a more capable lens to get the perfect shot. It’s all about versatility and allowing the freedom to do more with a single camera. Sony are aiming to stretch out to each end of the photographer spectrum from the occasional snapper, to the real enthusiasts.

Five HD Channel Gets Sky HD Release Date

March 18, 2010

channel-five-logo-ukJust this week I wrote about the introduction of ITV HD to Sky and Virgin’s high definition services. But upon browsing the web and checking my e-mails it has now come to my attention that another terrestrial channel, Five, will soon be launching an HD channel as well.

Five HD will start broadcasting to more than 2 million Sky HD subscribers in July of this year, which will put a smile on the face of fans of hit US drama’s such as CSI and FlashForward. In addition to this, in recent months and years Five has acquired the right to show popular australian soap Neighbours along with Home & Away. They also provide a solid line up of blockbuster movies and more importantly to football fans, UEFA Europa league football.

New McLaren Automotive MP4-12C Road Car Preview

March 17, 2010

mclaren-mp4-12c-high-technology-performance-road-carHigh performance motor car manufacturer McLaren, perhaps most famous for their success in the Formula 1 area, have only twice ventured into the road car market before producing two of the highest performance cars in the world at their respective times of release. Tomorrow however, they are set to launch the MP4-12C that comes under a new brand of motor car named ‘McLaren Automotive’.

It is good to see a proper British car manufacturer still flourishing. Since the fall of manufacturers such as Leyland Cars and more recently the likes of TVR, British motor car manufacturing has not exactly been fruitful in recent years. Although McLaren cars may not be ten a penny, what they have produced in the past has done our nation proud with the quality and performance they offer, whatever the price.

Microsoft Arc Keyboard – Stylish, Portable, Wireless & Curved!

March 17, 2010

microsoft-arc-keyboard-front-side-view-smallFirst introduced to the world earlier this year at CES 2010, the Microsoft Arc Keyboard has been released which compliments their previously released Microsoft Arc Mouse, which debuted in late 2008. It’s small form factor and unique design offers a compelling wireless experience, and I for one couldn’t wait to check it out at first glance.

The first thing that struck me when seeing the keyboard was how much the curvature resembled Apple’s Magic Mouse rather than Microsoft’s Arc Mouse design. It certainly takes some getting used to; the curved design feels unnatural when you first start typing on the keyboard, I know that much from using other curved Microsoft keyboards in the past.
