How To Keep Your Android Phone In Sync With Your Mac

android-macAndroid has come a long way since the days of Cupcake. Four desserts later, and new Android phones are rocking Android 2.3, otherwise known as Gingerbread, which has already made its way on to lots of handsets across the world.

If you’ve recently adopted Android, you may be surprised to see that there is no dedicated application for keeping all of your data in sync with your computer, at least not on most phones. Android makes sure that everything from your contacts to your application history is synced with the cloud, but what happens when you want to transfer those contacts over to your Mac? [Read more...]

How To Keep Your Android Phone In Sync With Your Windows PC

android-windowsKeeping all of the data on your phone in check is hard enough without having to worry about keeping it all synced and organised across your other devices too, but without a closed system like Apple’s iOS and iTunes relationship, it’s pretty hard to keep all of your Android data in one place locally.

Despite all of your information being in the cloud, if you wanted to access your contacts locally on your PC, you’d have a pretty tough time doing so, as Microsoft doesn’t include a tool within Windows to sync with any cloud services like you can with some of Apple’s applications in Mac OS X. This means that you’ll need a bit more third party software than you would on the Mac, but it’s still manageable! [Read more...]

Google Chrome 10 Web Browser Update Released – Boasts Better Speed, Security & Syncing Features

Despite only being released back in late 2008 Google’s internet browser Chrome has been exponentially increasing in popularity to the point that in this January it had risen to over 10% of all browser usage, the third most popular behind Firefox and Internet Explorer.

This week Google announced on their Chrome blog that version 10 of the Google Chrome Web Browser will feature an updated version of the JavaScript engine which should bring with it a 66% improvement with JavaScript performance, increases security from malicious web pages by extending Chrome’s sandboxing technology to the integrated flash player and offers password sync enabled by default.

Apple Purchased LaLa As ‘Insurance’ For iTunes – Could It Now Pave The Way For New MobileMe?

iTunes_LaLa_CloudIn 2009, the music streaming service LaLa was snapped up by Apple in a typical move from the Cupertino based giants, and as yet nothing has come of it in any way, shape, or form. And today, executives at Apple declared that the move was indeed comparable to insurance, and they have no plans to replace the almost entirely dominant iTunes distribution platform with a streaming service.

However, along with the discontinuing of Apple’s current MobileMe service, there is speculation arising that at last something will become of LaLa, as it becomes the building blocks for a new music streaming service from Apple, allowing iTunes users to upload their iTunes libraries to the ‘cloud’, and access the music from any device connected to the Internet. Of course, this is exactly what LaLa was originally set up to do back in 2007, so it is not altogether unfathomable that it may be the eventuality we are heading for.

Windows Phone 7 Preview – What Can We Expect From Microsoft’s All New Mobile OS?

Last week Zath got invited to the Microsoft offices in London, to have a sneak preview of what is in store for us with the new Windows Phone 7 operating system (OS) and also speak to Oded Ran (Head of Consumer Marketing, Windows Phone, UK) to see what answers he could give us to the various questions that are on our mind regarding Microsoft’s latest mobile phone platform.

One of the first things that strikes you when you look at Windows Phone 7 is it’s very different from the previous mobile versions of Windows, perhaps following the success of Windows 7, they are now wanting a mobile operating system which is worthy of being badged with the Windows (Phone) 7 name.

Also, many of the design successes from the likes of their media players such as the Zune HD have been used in this new mobile OS and choosing to leave behind support for previous versions of Windows Mobile has allowed them to create something new from the ground up.

In fact from seeing Windows Phone 7 in action, you see how their philosophy of removing the need for you to think what application you need to load to accomplish a given task, instead you are just presented with the options you might want to do, for example, to find the nearest pizza restaurant, you can just search without first thinking, do I need to be in search or do I need to be in the mapping application.

New Firefox 4 Beta Released – Includes Bookmarks/Open Tabs Sync & Panorama

firefox-logo-355Mozilla’s brand new version of Firefox has now hit the Beta stage, and adds a few intriguing new features that existing and new users alike may find quite useful…

The first change that may be noticed is the addition of Firefox Sync by default. Firefox Sync allows you to view all of your passwords, your browsing history, and even your currently open tabs from any device that you’re using Firefox with.

If you have never used it before, you’ll have to set up an account for the add-on (Sync comes bundled with Firefox 4 beta, but an add-on is required to be downloaded for earlier versions) before being able to utilise its features.

Flip Sync iPhone/iPod USB Cable Charger Keyring

flip-sync-iphone-cable-keyringIt seems that in all walks of life there is traditionally one single object that is forever evasive. Something that no matter how badly you want to, you can never find and these days, from personal experience anyway, it is those pesky USB-iPhone adapters that act as both a method of synchronising your Apple device with your PC, and as a charger.

However, now there is a fix in the form of the Flip Sync iPhone Cable Keyring and though it may not be full of features, for that would be entirely unnecessary, it does exactly as advertised and ultimately provides perfect convenience for iPhone, iPod Touch, iPod Classic and iPod Nano owners.

Music Anywhere – Carphone Warehouse Music Streaming Service Launched

carphone-warehouse-logoLast month we heard news that the Carphone Warehouse was entering the music streaming business with their iPhone app, My Hub. However, instead we are now being treated by the leading phone vendor to a slightly different service called ‘Music Anywhere’.

Music Anywhere differs slightly from the other music streaming services such as Spotify or Last.FM in that it simply makes a cloud-based copy of all the tracks you currently own.

Once you have set up your account, it registers the music tracks currently in your locally stored music library, in iTunes for example, and links them to your account. There is already a library of tracks already on their servers, which are at your disposal, but if your track is not in their catalogue it can be uploaded quickly to your account.

GoodSync Review (Mac OS X Syncing & Backup)

GoodSync-welcome-logoGoodSync is a backup and sync utility, originally for Windows owners. It has recently made its way to Mac OS X, however, so that Mac users can now enjoy all the benefits of backing up and syncing files with a dedicated utility to both local and online storage.

When you activate GoodSync on your Mac, your serial will be verified and you’ll be asked to enter your personal details. For me, this isn’t a sterling first impression, as I don’t like giving details such as my address and e-mail to third party companies, although there didn’t appear to be any validation in place to ensure that the details being entered were relevant to the fields.

Firefox Home iPhone App Released for Download

firefox-logo-355The Firefox Home application for iPhone we’ve been hearing so much about lately has finally made it through Apple’s approval process and in to the App Store.

Available for the iPhone and iPod Touch for free, the Firefox Home iPhone app allows you to take our tabs with you when you’re on the go, so you don’t have to start a whole new browsing session when you leave your desk.

The concept is pretty simple. All you have to do is install the free Firefox Sync add-on for your desktop browser, before creating an account and password which links your tabs between your desktop computer and phone. Then, when you download the Firefox Home app for iPhone and iPod Touch, you simply enter your account information and you’re good to go!
