Spore Game Review (PC)

Spore definitely looks like one of the most interesting games of the year, developed by renowned games genius Will Wright, and is one that appeals to pretty much every genre. So I thought it was well time that we had a good look at it, and as if to demonstrate the massive appeal I (a “hard-core” gamer) was already fighting a small child for game time. But on with the review, and right from the off this game is something special.
The principal idea behind this game is that you create your own cellular being, and then guide it through its evolution to a water dwelling animal and then onto the land as a creature before venturing into tribal, civilisation and space stages. Decisions that you make right at the beginning will (and I am not just quoting the marketing material here) dictate the rest of the game as your actions effect the species reputation and skills (as well as what it looks like). And this really is the beauty of this, you become scarily attached to your little friend which not only means you are more involved in the game, but you also keep coming back to it again and again. But let’s go through this in a little more of an ordered fashion, starting with the Cell phase.

We were told that it was a revolutionary new game, one that was totally different to anything before and one that would keep you captivated for hours. Whether it is or not is up for debate (see the review coming soon) but what we can definitely say is that it was popular with around 2 million copies sold. Just in case you haven’t worked out what I am talking about I am of course referring to Spore, the newest game from Will Wright the creator of The Sims.
However news released today shows that despite desperate attempts by EA and government funded organisations piracy is still a massive problems and this year Spore has been a particularly targeted victim. This all follows a study on BitTorrent which is a peer-to-peer sharing protocol allowing people to share files over the internet to lots of people easily and anonymously. Obviously this is a massive opportunity for piracy to work, and work it has with around 1.7 million downloads of Spore recorded this year.

Has your Spore creature been created yet? Millions of people have created their creatures since the Spore Creature Creator download was made available back in June.
These creatures have then been included into the Spore full game as other creature races that you may encounter during the course of the game – Will Wright and the rest of the development team have been quite clever here really! It means they’ve potentially reduced their development time in creating creatures or working on a random creature generator, by getting us (the gamers, their customers) to populate their game for them!

The Spore Creature Creator download is the pre-cursor to a new game that’s on the horizon from Will Wright, the creator of The Sims, this game is called ‘Spore’ – you’ll come to know that name well!
The main Spore game is due for release on PC on 5th September 2008. The aim of the game is to create your creature and evolve it into whatever you want it to be. Starting out as just single-cell organisms, the choices you make for the development of your species will have distinct effects as your creature evolves over time. Ultimately you can build an empire and decide to take over the galaxy, or be a peace keeping, fun loving creature.
