Sony Vaio L Series Review
February 9, 2010
Pretty much since the mouse and keyboard were put into mainstream use people have been looking for alternative ways for input that would be more flexible, efficient or fun. As of yet they’ve all pretty much failed (head tracker anyone?) but perhaps the latest idea will slowly start to slip into general use, the touchscreen interface – and here it is implemented in the Sony Vaio L Series.
Now they have been around for quite a while, but as we look at the Sony Vaio L series we’ll not only look at the machine by itself but also at the use of the touchscreen and how practical it actually is.
But firstly: the Vaio L Series. It works on the same principle as the Apple iMac in the way that it’s an ‘all in one’ PC, with a 24” screen surrounded by a glossy black frame which has an integrated ‘U’ shaped bottom and stand on the back both of which come in the standard silver colour that you can expect to see along with anything black!

In a world that is already full to the brim of laptops it is often quite difficult to make an impact if you are simply making an ‘all rounder’, which is somewhat ironic as that is the type of laptop that most people buy – the markets for the thinnest, biggest and most powerful of anything is normally relatively small!
But that is not to say that they can’t be good, and this week has brought the latest of Sony’s multimedia laptops the Vaio E series which promise to have “power, looks and multimedia performance”. So nothing really important then!
The fact that the Sony Vaio E Series is not focused on any particular thing makes it difficult to pick out any real big points to start with, so it makes logical sense to start on the outside with the ‘looks’ and as per usual with Vaio laptops it looks sleek, stylish and comes ready emblazoned with ‘VAIO’ and ‘Sony’ in big silver letters on the lid, just in case you forgot! Admittedly it does look pretty much like every other Vaio laptop such as the Vaio NW Series, Vaio F, S & Y Series and even the Sony Netbook (W Series). Although that said, given what the others do look like that’s not necessarily a bad thing!

Sony have been out in force at CES 2010 with a number of announcements about new Sony Vaio laptops that they’ll be releasing in the coming months. There would appear to quite a selection to choose from in their various different model series of Sony Vaio branded notebooks and also includes a Sony netbook, a market in which they’ve made a late entry into in the last year.
Sony Netbook (Vaio X) Announced
September 2, 2009
This week hails the start of the IFA in Berlin, the consumer electronics and home appliances business event that always has something new and exciting to show us, and this year it is courtesy of Sony who have unveiled the much talked about Vaio X. This Sony netbook aims to sail to the top of the already rather convoluted netbook market (of which there is already two variations from themselves in the form of the Sony Vaio W netbook and Sony Vaio P netbook).
The first thing you notice is that it’s fairly big for a netbook – 11 inches – and also that it is very thin, something made possible by its undoubtedly futuristic and practical (but most probably expensive) carbon fibre casing which is nicely complimented by the aluminium keyboard.

What’s this? Another Sony netbook? If you can remember back to CES 2009 you may recall the Sony ‘Netbook’ Vaio P Series which appeared to be Sony’s answer to the netbook due to its size, specs and general time of arrival but was horrendously expensive and thus probably deserved its official label of ‘Portable PC’ rather than the one of ‘Sony netbook‘ that the public gave it. So it seemed that was all they were going to give us, but finally they have released their proper take on the netbook phenomenon….
Sony Vaio NW Range Launched
June 22, 2009
Having been at the front line of technology for a good few decades now any release by Sony is definitely worth a mention, and despite the somewhat low-impact last addition to the Vaio line up with the P-series ‘Sony netbook’ they are back to what they do best with the Sony Vaio NW notebook range.
Unsurprisingly the Sony Vaio NW range is sleek, subtly curved and available in a range of soft tones (including birch white, walnut brown and rattan silver) all of which have the iconic ‘Vaio’ logo embossed in silver in big letters along the top.
However the most notable thing about the NW range is not its design (as you would probably struggle to distinguish from, well, any other Vaio) but the fact that, according to Sony, it offers ‘entry level’ pricing for a Blu-Ray equipped laptop.

When people claim to have consumer electronics made specifically for women, I tend to shudder and walk hurriedly away. I have yet to come across a piece of technology that has been specifically designed to be used, and only used, by a lady (please refrain from the crude jokes about sex toys – I’m clearly not referring to these). What they tend to mean is that the item is now pink. Or is covered in glitter. Or sequins. For me, this usually makes my face scrunch up into a rather goblin-like state, whilst I mutter unpleasant things endlessly until said piece of technology is no longer within my periphery.
Lenovo Pocket Yoga Netbook Was Just A Concept!
March 17, 2009
Only yesterday we like so many people on the Internet were intrigued by this possible new ‘touchscreen netbook’, the Lenovo Pocket Yoga and how it might be appear to be a genuine rival to the Sony Vaio ‘P Series’ portable PC, but it now turns out that it was only a concept that Lenovo were working on.
Lenovo Pocket Yoga – A Leatherbound Touchscreen Netbook?
March 16, 2009
A couple of months ago Sony showed us their Vaio P-Series which aimed to open up a new avenue within the netbook market; an avenue that incorporated nice looks, portability and good specs in one thin, 8 inch and expensive package. In fact Sony even gave it a new label: a Portable PC.
As of yet it has been alone in its own little niche – no other ‘netbooks’ are as ridiculously portable as the P-series, and neither are they as expensive (it is priced at around £850). But even a cursory glance at the new ‘Pocket Yoga’ from Lenovo will tell you that the Vaio now has a friend.
Unfortunately (with many of these ‘teaser’ releases) we know next to nothing about the Pocket Yoga besides what we can see in the photos they have given us – but we do have enough to see that it will not only be interesting in its own right, but will also serve as a good challenger to the Vaio in the ‘executive Portable PC’ market.

As you may have read already, netbooks are a big thing and they are attracting some of the biggest names. However Sony have been conspicuous by their absence and there has been much talk as to what is going on behind the walls of Sony HQ, most of it under the assumption that they are planning a venture into the packed netbook market.
So come CES 2009 many people were very excited at the prospect of a Sony Netbook and as they crammed round the stall they got a view of something very interesting. The Sony Vaio P-series, a product which follows the successful line of Vaio products renowned for their quality, and the letter P almost definitely standing for portable. But why the confusion? Well read on!
