Can The Sony NGP Be A Handheld Gaming Success?

February 15, 2011

Sony_NGPThe Sony NGP (PSP2) has been announced, but will it end up being successful? When the original PSP-1000 hit the market in September of 2005, the world let out a simultaneous gasp of excitement as to the future of the portable gaming industry.

Never before had anyone actually provided a viable gaming alternative for those who aren’t buying into Nintendo’s ever present novelty take on how gaming should be. Never again would mobile gaming just be about 2D horizontal scroller titles, such as Mario or Sonic, is what we thought, at least. And to be fair, the original Sony PSP, and the subsequent refresher models, the PSP-2000 and 3000 were a runaway success, selling 62 million units worldwide as of late 2010.

Sony NGP (aka PSP 2) Announced – Impressive Handheld Console Features!

January 28, 2011

NGP_front_viewNobody can say that they were surprised at this announcement. But it’s now official, Sony’s new handheld is coming and will be called NGP (Next Generation Portable).

Many thought that it would be called Sony PSP 2 from previous rumours, but maybe they moved away from the PSP name to distance the NGP from the under performing sales of the PSP. Whatever the reason, it looks bloody fantastic.

There were rumours of the NGP being as powerful as the PS3 which had people scratching their heads as to how it could be. Well it looks like it so far! So what can we expect from the NGP, what games are going to be released and what’s the price going to be?

Sony Ericsson Playstation/PSP Phone Release Might Actually Be Real? Or Is It Fake?

October 27, 2010

sony-ericsson-playstation-phone-android-handheld-game-controllerRumours have been circulating for a long time about the possibility of a Playstation/PSP mobile phone and now it seems like those rumours could be true.

In fact it’s nearly two years since we first wrote about the possibility of seeing a possible Sony PSP phone and that it could potentially mean Sony splitting from Ericsson over it, clearly that hasn’t happened!

Details have been leaked onto the Internet showing images of the new PS Phone which looks exactly like a PSP Go but with the added function of being used as a mobile phone. It’s possible that the PS Phone could run on Android 3.0 aka ‘Gingerbread’, as well as sporting a 1GHz processor, 512MB RAM, 1GB ROM and a screen measuring between 3.7 and 4.1 inches.

Sony Working On New Playstation / PSP 2 Hardware?

July 8, 2010

sony-psp-2-rumour-conceptIt’s been confirmed that Sony are working on a new Playstation concept which was announced by the Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida.

It’s possible that this could be the rumoured new Sony PSP 2 that we mentioned a while back which would seem the more likely option as people expect the Playstation 3 to last for another 4-5 years at least. SCE (Sony Computer Entertainment) filed a trademark called ‘Playview’, with the filing listing a few teasers as to what it could be:

God of War Review (Book)

June 28, 2010

god-of-war-book-cover“Kratos is a slave to the Gods of Olympus. Plagued by the nightmares of his past, the brutal warrior would do anything to be free of his debt. He is on the verge of losing all hope when the Gods give him one last task to end his servitude……….He must destroy Ares, the God of War”

I’ve only recently got into the God of War games but I feel ashamed as I’ve been missing out on some cracking games, so I’m making up for lost time. The series is a massive success, so much so that a novel of the first game has been written and I was expecting it to be on the cheesy side, and not to have that many pages within it, but I was surprised at just how good the God of War book is.

Sony Playstation Network (PSN) Gets ‘Heartless’ Simultaneous Cinema Movie Release

May 17, 2010

heartless-sony-playstation-network-psn-movie-releaseSurely it was only a matter time before this happened, but the latest update to Sony’s Playstation Network (PSN) is going to be getting the first exclusive film ‘Heartless’ which will be released simultaneously with cinemas on May 21.

The film will star Jim Sturgess and Noel Clarke (of Doctor Who fame) in a psychological horror and is directed by Philip Ridley. The story sounds quite interesting and is about a trouble young man who lives in the East of London in an area which is renounced for violent hoodies. The yobs all seem to be wearing demon masks but it turns out there are actually demons.

Sony Walkman W252 – Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker MP3 Player

May 16, 2010

sony-walkman-w252-metal-gear-solid-special-editionThe idea of releasing special/limited editions of products for major film/book/game releases is nothing new (and with the World Cup on the horizon I imagine we’ll see a few to do with that in the future) and whilst the combination of a Sony PSP game and an MP3 player might not be the most obvious one it is what Sony are using to promote the latest release under the ‘Metal Gear Solid’ name.

The new limited edition Metal Gear Solid Sony Walkman in question is a new version of the W252 which is – basically – a wearable MP3 player which is designed for the more active members of the music listening community, which of course is the link that Sony are going for with the connections to the obviously active Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker game.

New Sony PSP 2 To Be Announced At E3? (Rumour)

May 14, 2010

sony-psp-2-rumour-conceptAlong with the announcement of Nintendo’s DSi successor, the ’3DS’, it’s not surprising for the rumour mill to start spitting out more information about the possibility of there being a Sony PSP 2 handheld gaming console.

I for one would guess that this is definitely going to be happening, especially after the flop that is the Sony PSP Go, and hopefully it will have something worth shouting about like some touch screen technology, or possibly even 3D gaming?

New God of War: Ghost of Sparta PSP Game Announced

May 4, 2010

god-of-war-kratosReady at Dawn has announced that they are working on a new God of War game for the Sony PSP which will be titled ‘God of War: Ghost of Sparta’. Following on from the success that was ‘Chains of Olympus’, I’m glad to hear that Kratos will be involved in a brand new game exclusively for the PSP.

I’ve only recently started to play God of War: Chains of Olympus and I’ve been amazed at how good and smooth everything runs on Sony’s PSP handheld console, and it really does show you what the capabilities are. Plus with Ready at Dawn going for even better visuals and overall gameplay, Ghost of Sparta could potentially be the best PSP game on the market.

Sony PSP Mini Games To Be Playable On Playstation 3

December 9, 2009

sony-psp-ps3-minis-logoSony has announced that the Sony PSP Mini games will be making their way over to the PS3 before Christmas. A new firmware update will be released on 17th December which will have a Minis emulator which will allow people to download the games directly onto their PS3 and still be able to transfer them over to your PSP if you so wish.

For those that aren’t aware of what the PSP Minis are, they were released along with the PSPgo to rival the massive success of the games on the iPhone. But do be aware that it will be the ‘majority’ of the PSP Minis that you’ll be able to play on your PS3, so everything you download from the 17th December onwards will be fine.

MusicSkins Review (Personalise Hi-Tech Gadgets With Skins)

November 9, 2009

musicskins-logoYou’ve got your iPod, you’ve got your laptop, and now you can proudly walk around showing them off just like everybody else. But we humans seem to have an inherent need to be different, so somehow stand out, and thus the idea of adding skins to your prized electronic possessions arose and a company called MusicSkins are at the forefront of this market and so we thought we’d have a look.

The first thing you’ve got to do if you want to make your device unique is have the right device, but fortunately this is a pretty easy step as there is a fairly wide range available: the Nintendo DS, Sony PSP and PSP slim, iPhones, iPods, Zunes, SanDisks, a whole variety of popular phones (10) , five different size of laptops (12, 13, 14, 15 and 17 inches), Seagate Hard Drives and most importantly four types of Guitar Hero controllers.

But, alas, despite saying it was easy I found I in fact had none of them which fortunately is more of an exception (especially considering how much I love new tech) than the rule. Mostly this is due to the fact that MusicSkins do not currently offer netbook skins (hint hint!), or at least skins for those less than 12” – so borrowing a sibling’s Nintendo DS was then next step…

Eurogamer Expo 2009 (London) – Games Review: Part 1

November 4, 2009

eurogamer-expo-2009-logoAs I’m sure you are aware that some of us at Zath have recently visited the Euogamer Expo’s at both Leeds and London, and this is the first of a few posts having a look at some of the games I got to have a go on at the latter and picking out some of the best ones just in time for Christmas (now less than two months away for those of you not counting!).

So on with the games, and today I’ll be starting with two fairly dissimilar ones in the form of ‘Avatar’ and ‘Professor Layton & Pandora’s Box’ which were played on the PS3 and Nintendo DS respectively!

Nintendo DSi XL (LL) Goes Bigger And Better?

October 29, 2009

nintendo-dsi-ll-xlWhen you need to come up with something new, a good starting point is to take what you’ve got and make it either bigger or smaller – most things in the world of technology seem to go that way (see TV’s for bigger, and mobile phones for smaller) and now the Nintendo DS has followed suit with the Nintendo DSi LL (XL), not long after we wrote about the rumours of a new Nintendo handheld gaming system in development.

The DSi LL is essentially the larger brother of the Nintendo DSi as it is exactly the same machine but 30% bigger, which interestingly gives it two 4.25” screens both of which are bigger than the PSP-3000’s measly 4” one. But why would Nintendo want to do this? Surely the future is in the miniature?

A New Nintendo Handheld Gaming System In Development?

October 19, 2009

nintendo-logoThis is never going to end is it?

I can’t remember the last time that we’ve had to wait more than 18 months before Nintendo or Sony have announced a newer version of either the DS/DSi or PSP handheld gaming systems. Well it’s Nintendo’s turn………….again.

I love my DS and don’t think I’ll ever get rid of it as I have some really great games for it and there’s still more to come out, or others I haven’t got round to buying yet.

Studio Ghibli DS Game Announced

October 6, 2009

ninokuni-the-another-world-nintendo-ds-screenshotI’m a massive fan of Studio Ghibli films and still find them to be some of the best animated films around. In case you’re unaware, Studio Ghibli are the masters of animation who brought us films such as Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle and the upcoming Ponyo.

Studio Ghibli have teamed up with Level 5 who are the people responsible for Professor Layton games, and are going to be doing an RPG game that is being specifically made for a new high capacity Nintendo DS cart that can store up to 4GB of date which is twice as much as the PSP’s UMD’s, which has a limit of 1.8GB.

Sony PSP Mini Games Announced

August 25, 2009

sony-pspRecently at GamesCom, Sony announced the new PS3 Slim along with a new feature for the PSP called ‘Minis’ – mini games!

Minis are going to be similar to what you already see on the Playstation Network and WiiWare. Smaller companies are going to develop their own games for people to download to play on the PSP. Each of the games will be limited to a file size of only 100MB which is tiny (or mini) compared to how much PSOne games take up on your memory stick for your PSP.

Jak and Daxter 5 Rumour? (PS3)

August 20, 2009

jak-and-daxter-characters-poseThis is only talk at the minute, but I couldn’t contain my excitement at the prospect of this! So I’m spreading the wealth with my fellow Jak and Daxter fans.

As most of you know GamesCom is currently on in Germany with a lot of announcements, like the new Sony PS3 Slim. But nothing is more exciting than the fact that Arne Meyer (the community manager at Naughty Dog) said they are keen to do a PS3 instalment of Jak and Daxter!! He was quoted as saying:

iPhone 3.0: The Dark Side – Part 2

August 18, 2009

bad-apple-skull“Bring On The Pain!”

Ages ago now (sorry), realising that I couldn’t really say what I had intended to say about Apple without actually going through the “fail” process for myself after writing iPhone 3.0: The Dark Side – Part 1, I decided to sacrifice my un-activated 1.0 iPhone in the name of science, and upgraded the firmware to iPhone 3.0. Here’s how it went…

I connected the iPhone to my PC, then waited the 45 minutes or so it takes for Apple’s flagship product to load in Windows. It duly reported that a firmware update was available, so I chose to install and waited. After downloading and installing, the iPhone re-booted and reported that it was waiting to be activated. “That’s all folks!” I thought, but after 2 minutes of sitting doing nothing, my iPhone gave up trying to activate and just turned on and worked.

10 Most Wanted Games…That Make Us Glad That Summer’s Over!

August 12, 2009

The summer, traditionally a quiet time for games, so here at Zath, we’ve been looking forward to lots of upcoming games that are in store for us in the coming months, here’s a the list of the 10 games that I’m personally looking forward to playing the most of all in the next few months.

There aren’t any Wii exclusives on my list as there really isn’t anything for me to get really excited over at the minute. There are good games coming out like Red Steel 2, Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Super Mario Bros. Wii, but they just don’t excite me as much as the list I’ve produced below.

So, here are the top 10 games I’m most excited about, in no particular order…

‘Mercury’ Review (PSP)

July 28, 2009

mercury-psp-coverYou may remember this game from a few years ago when the PSP was first released back in 2005. Well it’s now available for your enjoyment via the Playstation Network for the bargain price of £4.79, and with only a file size of 258MB.

You can only play this on your Sony PSP, so don’t try to buy it expecting to play it on your PS3 – I found it much better to download via my PS3, install it and then just copy it straight over to my PSP.

Mercury never interested me when the first game came out, but I wanted something different to play and thought it could be fun. I was right, this is my kind of puzzle game, and I can spend a good hour or two going through the puzzles at a time.
