LG Plasma TVs

October 3, 2008

lg-plasma-tvThe latest range of LG Plasma TV were recently unveiled at an LG Plasma TV bloggers’ event at Fulham FC’s Craven Cottage football ground (LG are their sponsor).

There were three new models on show at the event and these were as follows:

  • LG 32PG6000 (720p) - this is the world’s first production 32? Plasma, normally plasmas are much larger, this would be great if you have a smallish room to fill.
  • LG 50PG6900 (1080p) - this 50″ model features a dual-tuner Freeview+ Plasma with built-in 160GB PVR - very useful indeed!
  • LG 50PG70000 (1080p) - this 50″ beast is the top-of-the-line Plasma with features such as Bluetooth connectivity.

When it comes to home cinema displays - you generally need to make a choice between a high definition LCD or plasma TV. I always spend a lot of time researching what is currently considered the best in terms of quality at my set price point to make sure I get the best deal.

Pure Review (PS3)

October 2, 2008

pure-ps3-game-2As you may have already read in my “Pure (PS3) Demo” review, the game is a racing game on ATV bikes and has a feel of Motorstorm and SSX. The craziness of Motorstorm with 16 riders on the track at one time which can be fun, and the tricks you can pull off on the jumps is reminiscent of SSX.

You might notice a difference to this review and this is because I’m going to be doing game reviews from the tech side a bit more to give a deeper account of the game being reviewed.

And what a game to start with!

The opening of Pure has you completing a training session the same as in the demo, and then you have to build your own ATV which is really cool! Then it’s into the game! When you’ve completed a few races and gained some points you unlock extra parts for your bike which helps to improve your ATV.

When The Windows Blows: A Post-Apocalyptic Commentary On Vista - Part 1

October 1, 2008

windows-95-boot-screenI remember Windows 95 on floppies and it was rubbish

I think it came on about 17 of the little buggers (proprietary 2MB formatted so don’t think you’ll be backing any of them up).

Of course, I couldn’t wait to crowbar the thing on to my 486. As the “Start me up” advert with the Rolling Stones resonated in my memory, I was about to install the RTM version of Chicago!! The true power of my Multi-Media PC was about to spring to life! It was all going to be perfect, because Mick said so!
Well, it made a grown man cry.

iTunes 8 Review

September 28, 2008

apple-itunes-8-logoAs an iPod Classic owner, I’ve got pretty used to downloading new versions of iTunes over the past few months which don’t seem to offer any new features, but iTunes 8 promised something new, so I was looking forward to giving it a go.

There’s one new feature which you’ll notice straight away which is called “Genius”. Genius is actually two very different things in iTunes 8 with completely different purposes. The first is basically the “mini-store” from previous versions, but on steroids.

Pure (PS3 Demo)

September 19, 2008

pure-ps3-gameImagine a mix between Motorstorm and SSX……..and you’ve got Pure!

I saw the PS3 demo for this game on the Playstation Network and thought it could be good for a laugh for a couple of minutes, but this game has left me wanting more.

Pure is the new ATV racing game from Disney Interactive. In the demo, you have objectives to complete before you can race. The objectives are there just to get you used to the game controls and include, doing a lap around the track, pulling tricks, boosting and completing a lap within 27 seconds.

Papershow Review

September 5, 2008

papershow-meeting-gadgetPapershow is a new presentation device that I’ve had the opportunity to preview and test out. Papershow is basically a package that comprises a bluetooth pen device and a USB memory stick/bluetooth dongle that pair together and work with a pad of ‘digital paper’ (paper with a grid on to enable the motion tracking) that’s included in the pack.

The idea is that Papershow substitutes for a whiteboard, flip chart or traditional minute taking, making it easy to convey ideas during the meeting, save the results and share them after the event. This functionality will be familiar to those who have electronic smartboards, but this new technology is much cheaper and can be used wherever you can take a laptop or have a computer/projector system provided at your meeting/conference venue.

Sky HD Review

August 30, 2008

sky-hd-logoI’ve been looking at buying Sky HD on and off for over a year now, basically since I got a my Samsung 32″ LCD HDTV. Up until now I’ve been using an upscaling DVD player to bring my viewing closer to High Definition quality, but now here’s my Sky HD review.

I’ve been waiting for the prices to drop on the initial cost of the Sky High Definition box and the HD additional monthly subscription – in that time the cost of the box has about halved in price to around £150 for existing customers. The £10 additional monthly fee remains for the High Definition subscription, however I looked at it that you’re getting a much higher quality viewing experience for the sake of £2.50 per week - around the cost of your favourite beverage while you’re out and about - decent value I think!

Motorstorm (PS3 Platinum)

August 18, 2008

motorstorm-platinum-coverStart your engines to one of the dark horses of the Playstation 3’s release titles.

I could not believe how good and addictive this Motorstorm is. I got this with a package as I didn’t think there were any other games better looking and thought it would be ok for a couple of hours or so.

A year down the line and I still love this game. Motorstorm is off road racing at its best and now it’s back as one of the PS3 Platinum games.

I’m not really one for racing games as I find them very repetitive and get boring very quickly, but this is just pure chaos on dirt tracks and lots of exploding cars and bodies flying everywhere and I love it.

Dell Studio Hybrid

August 14, 2008

dell-studio-hybridThe Dell Studio Hybrid is the latest new Dell product range being released - I got to take a sneak-peek at it at the recent Dell Studio Laptop launch at Silverstone, so here’s what I thought to it…

Do you still have one of those large, noisy, beige boxes of a computer sat on your desk? Do you like the idea of minimalist computing like you often see with Apple Macs? The Studio Hybrid is a new breed of computer from Dell.

The Dell Hybrid is a highly compact desktop computer which Dell has really tried to make as green as possible – in the environmental sense at least, the actual case features an interchangeable ‘shell’ casing that comes in a variety of colours see-through colours as well as a bamboo casing which gives it a real distinctive look - it certainly fits well in with their design-conscious Dell Studio Laptop range.

Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction (PS3 Platinum)

August 13, 2008

ratchet-and-clank-tools-of-destruction-coverThis is a welcome return for Ratchet and Clank.

I was a big fan of the games on the Playstation 2, and now they’ve made the game bigger and it looks absolutely gorgeous in HD!

This time around, Ratchet is being hunted down by the evil Emperor Tachyon who wants to destroy the lombax race and will stop at nothing to accomplish his goal, and Ratchet is the last one alive!!

It’s the same type of game as the previous Ratchet and Clank games, but they’re just so much fun. There’s a lot of humour in the cuts scenes and same really good one-liners from Captain Qwark who appears again as the village idiot who just keeps ruining things and getting himself into trouble. Along the way, Clank starts seeing like alien robots called the ‘Zoni’ and he starts the think he’s losing his bolts as only he can see them.
