Five HD Channel Gets Sky HD Release Date

March 18, 2010

channel-five-logo-ukJust this week I wrote about the introduction of ITV HD to Sky and Virgin’s high definition services. But upon browsing the web and checking my e-mails it has now come to my attention that another terrestrial channel, Five, will soon be launching an HD channel as well.

Five HD will start broadcasting to more than 2 million Sky HD subscribers in July of this year, which will put a smile on the face of fans of hit US drama’s such as CSI and FlashForward. In addition to this, in recent months and years Five has acquired the right to show popular australian soap Neighbours along with Home & Away. They also provide a solid line up of blockbuster movies and more importantly to football fans, UEFA Europa league football.

ITV HD Channel Gets Sky HD & Virgin Media Release Date

March 16, 2010

itv-hd-unavailable-screenshotThis is big news for those of us who enjoy watching a lot of sport. Football in particular. It has been confirmed that ITV1 will at last be officially broadcast in HD as of this April 2010 for Sky HD and Virgin Media customers. It comes as no surprise seeing as the company have shared broadcasting rights in the UK for this Summer’s World Cup in South Africa.

ITV HD has been airing Freeview and Freesat for a while now, but from next month it will, for the first time, be a standalone channel. Obviously the major news though, is that Sky HD and Virgin Media V+ subscribers will now have access to the high definition channel.

Of course, ITV is more than just a sports channel. A lot more. Although many people may not enjoy all of the shows aired, it is clear that many of us do. Soaps such as Coronation Street and reality/talent shows such as Britain’s Got Talent keep millions pinned to their armchairs for hours upon end throughout the year. Other top shows include Law and Order: UK and Lewis which have become popular more recently.

Bundle Box Offers UK An Early iPad Release Date

March 14, 2010

bundlebox-logo-buy-US-products-from-ukTransatlantic shopping service Bundle Box have managed to secure a deal which will allow UK customers to get a fully legit Apple iPad before the official UK release date. Not only does it not cost any extra than it would if you waited for the official release, you actually save £30 on the predicted launch price due to the differences in retail price between the UK and USA.

So you may be thinking, well won’t I have to pay import duty? Won’t that make the savings pretty much negligible? Well actually, no. Thanks to a binding ruling by UK customs, there is a guaranteed 0% import cost.

So it all sounds pretty spectacular. Of course, there will be plenty of skeptics which will disregard the idea under the assumption there is a ‘catch’. As far as I can tell it is trustworthy and I can’t see why it wouldn’t be attractive to potential iPad buyers. In addition to the lower costs and early release, delivery is promised within 3 days of the US launch date. The pre-order of the Apple iPad in the US opened on Friday 12th March.

Steam Coming To Mac OS X (Digital Games Distribution)

March 9, 2010

steam-logoI know, I know, Christmas happened way back in December, but presents are better late than never! In case any of you Apple fanboys out there missed the news, Steam announced yesterday morning that they’re bringing their service to the Mac along with a great library of games which will be available to purchase like PC users running Steam.

In case you’ve not used used it before, Steam is probably the best digital games distribution platform out there, which most of the big and small games publishers are now using to cut out the need for physical media distribution for games. Not only are publishers using it to release new games, but also to find a market for their older games, for example Lucasarts re-released some of their older classic titles. It’s fair to say that we’re big fans of it here at Zath.

Street Fighter IV iPhone App Preview

February 16, 2010

Capcom have announced that Street Fighter IV will be released for iPhone this March and from what I’ve read, it sounds like they’re trying to keep what made Street Fighter IV such an acclaimed hit upon its release last year.

The same art style will be used on the characters but in a smaller, scaled down version. The list of characters so far is just Ken and Ryu, but there will be old fighters and some of the new ones from SFIV included in the iPhone release.

Microsoft Office 2010 RC Download Released

February 3, 2010

Every few years or so we are all presented with a new version of Microsoft’s hugely popular office suite of applications. The last time this happened was in 2007 and please correct me if I’m wrong, not all that many people/companies took kindly to it with the majority choosing to stick with the perfectly capable 2003 version.

Microsoft Office 2010 has now hit the Release Candidate (RC) stage after a period of beta testing which started in November and now the beta testers will be getting to play around with this Office 2010 RC download. As of last month, there were a total 2 million downloads of the beta release. This is no doubt a major milestone on the way to releasing the final version which will be offered in both 32 and 64 bit editions for the first time ever.

Google’s Nexus One Gets Multi-Touch & Vodafone UK Release Date Soon?

February 2, 2010

Huge news for all you Android fans out there, especially in the States – the Google Nexus One mobile phone received a software update earlier today enabling multitouch on not only the default browser, but also on the Google Maps and Gallery apps.

There was speculation of whether the European version of Google’s latest phone would have multitouch enabled by default like Motorola’s Droid (known as the Motorola Milestone in Europe), but few expected a US software update so soon enabling multitouch.

Sony Ericsson Vivaz Mobile Phone Announced

January 26, 2010

Following the recent release on the Sony Ericsson Satio which we had the pleasure of testing here at Zath, they have announced the second instalment of their new family of ‘communication entertainment’ phones which promises to not only match, but exceed the standard set by its predecessor: the Sony Ericsson Vivaz.

Even if you didn’t know beforehand that the two mobile phones were ‘related’ just looking at the two next to each other kind of gives it away as the Vivaz looks remarkably like a slimmed down, brighter version of the comparatively blocky Satio.

This isn’t all that surprising as ‘looks’ seem to be one of the main two selling points of the Vivaz, and despite the fact that really it looks nothing like the shape of ‘the human body’ (which is what the publicity excitedly claims) the new design philosophy of ‘delivering beauty inside and out’ has succeeded as it really does look quite nice!

Sony Motion Controller (Arc) Release Date Delayed

January 21, 2010

Sony have announced that their new PS3 motion controller, which was due out this Spring, has had it’s release date pushed back to Autumn 2010 for a worldwide release.

The reason it seems as to why this has been delayed is that:

“We have decided to release the Motion Controller in Fall 2010 when we will be able to offer an exciting and varied line-up of software titles that will deliver the new entertainment experience to PS3 users”

So by the sounds of that, it means that companies aren’t getting the games ready on time for the PS3 motion controller’s original release date and it will now go up against Microsoft’s Project Natal release date that will happen around the same time. Will this delay turn out to be a poor move from Sony?

Uncharted 3 In Development? (PS3 Rumour)

January 18, 2010

It’s officially…unofficial. Uncharted 3 is going to be hitting the PS3 perhaps sooner than we thought.

Nolan North who is the voice and the mo-cap actor for Nathan Drake, the star of Uncharted in case you were wondering, has said that he’s back this year working on Uncharted 3. Following on from the impressive Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and the amazing Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, why wouldn’t Naughty Dog bring us another Uncharted? It’s immensely entertaining, immensely popular, so it’d be stupid not to make another.
