Monkey Island 2: Special Edition On Its Way? (Rumour)

March 8, 2010

monkey-island-2-lechucks-revenge-coverWe could be about to see an announcement from Lucasarts on the re-release of Monkey Island 2. Following on from the success that Lucasarts had from re-releasing the first Monkey Island: Special Edition, why would they not do it for the second? Which was arguably a better game?

Of course if they did re-release the second of Guybrush Threepwood’s adventures, I sure it would get a graphical overhaul as well as audio for the characters in the game.

I’m a big fan of Monkey Island of have them all set on my shelf including the latest Tales of Monkey Island, so to get to play Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge with better visuals sounds like fun to me.

Microsoft’s CES Press Event – HP Slate & Xbox 360 News (CES 2010)

January 7, 2010

After much hype running up to Microsoft’s press event at CES yesterday evening, (it took place at 6PM Pacific, 2AM GMT) there wasn’t much to shout about, although there was one interesting product revealing in the form of the HP Slate.

Referring to the HP Slate, Steve Ballmer said that the device is “more powerful than a phone and almost as powerful as a PC. Perfect for reading, surfing the web and taking entertainment on the go”. It runs Windows 7 and is fully touch screen operated, sporting various modes that allow the user to watch movies, use the device as an e-book or a regular PC. It certainly looks impressive, but however they market the Slate it’s still not the Courier that everyone was hoping for!

HP Pavilion Elite Desktop PCs Announced (CES 2010)

January 6, 2010

As per usual, we’re spoilt for choice at this year’s CES for computing and technology goodness, and HP’s getting in on the fun with the release of desktops, laptops, netbooks and a new TouchSmart to follow! The newly released desktops are Pavilion Elite desktops, imaginatively named the 110f, 120f, 130f and 170f…

HP Pavilion Elite 110f

Starting from the bottom, the 110f comes packed full of goodness with an AMD Phenom 925 Quad-Core Processor clocked at 2.80GHz and 8GB DDR3 RAM. Couple this with a 1TB hard drive, a DVD burner with LightScribe capability and ATI Radeon HD 4350 graphics giving you 512MB graphics memory and you’ve got one hell of a machine!

Considering that the 110f is the base model in these four new desktops, it looks like we’ve got a lot to look forward to. Pricing hasn’t yet been announced, but here’s to hoping it’s reasonable… The machine will also come with Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit) out of the box.

Unlocker Review (How To Remove Windows Restrictions When Deleting Files)

January 5, 2010

One of the most irritating things I find with Windows, even now with Windows 7, is that sometimes, for no apparent reason, Windows will reject any attempt to delete a file after a program that may or may not still be in use has taken control of it and refused to let go. Apparently my files really are that precious. But seriously it must be one of the most annoying things in the world, especially with no simple method of force deleting something.

You can imagine how happy I was when I stumbled upon a little application called Unlocker. Put simply, unlocker, as the name suggests, unlocks files from any connected programs that interfere when trying to move or alter a file.

How To Get Dolby Digital Sound From A Standard PC/Mac Mini Audio Output

December 29, 2009

I use my Mac Mini for everything… Surfing the net, managing my humongous iTunes library, watching HD video files? You name it, I do it. Sitting next to the Mac Mini is my Sony DAV-DZ260 Home Theatre System (amazing amp) which outputs to a 5.1 surround sound system.

Ever since getting the Mac Mini, I’ve connected it to the amplifier with a standard PC audio cable, but this meant that when I was watching my downloaded TV or movies from iTunes or other sources, I could only get 2.0 stereo sound which wasn’t as good an experience as the 5.1 I got from DVD’s played through the system.

Final Fantasy XIV Beta Sign-Ups Open

December 18, 2009

final-fantasy-14-logoJust as Final Fantasy XIII has been released in Japan (slightly jealous), Final Fantasy XIV Online Beta has been made available for people to sign up and apply to get their hands on some early gameplay time in Europe and the US of A.

At the minute the Beta is only available for the PC, but nothing has yet been announced as regards the Playstation 3 version of the game. Obviously, I’ve applied for the PC Beta as I’d love to play this because of what I saw in the Final Fantasy XIV trailer which I’ve mentioned in the past.

Dropbox Review (File Sync Software)

October 20, 2009

dropbox-logo-cloud-computing-file-accessMy MobileMe subscription ran out last month, and I decided not to renew it, as I didn’t use the 20GB online capacity you’re given with the service. In fact I only ever used it as file sync software to transfer a few documents between home and wherever I happened to be, and for me that wasn’t worth £59 a year. Naturally, I needed a replacement, and decided to go with an application called Dropbox, a free application available for Windows, Mac OS X, the iPhone and Linux which allows you to share files between your computers or over the internet on a public computer.

The thing that attracted me to Dropbox was the fact that it isn’t just a web-based file hosting service, it’s an application that you can install on your computer whatever OS you’re running and just drag and drop files into your “Dropbox” folder on your hard drive. When you add or remove files from the folder, every other dropbox you have that’s linked to the same account will automatically sync and update the files in its own folder – so it’s also working as a form of online file backup.
