iPhone 3.0: The Dark Side – Part 1

June 21, 2009

iphone-dr-evilI know what you’re thinking.

Here’s the Windows Nerd, back for another round of Apple bashing. Well let me get a few things straight right now before we begin. I own an iPhone and more than that, I think it pretty excellent. There is absolutely nothing out there that even comes close to the intuitive user interface, the plethora of fantastic apps and the sheer usability of what is quite simply, the best phone ever made. Am I going to use an awkward, clunky Windows Mobile interface, or am I going to use an iPhone? Hmm, tough call isn’t it?

Free SIM Cards

March 22, 2009

sim-cardsA few people have recently asked me about free SIM cards on Pay As You Go (PAYG) for mobile phones, so I thought I should perhaps provide a quick summary of the different options on offer.

Given the current economic climate, everyone is trying to save money wherever they can and I know from experience as when coming towards the end of my current mobile phone contract, I didn’t really want to commit to yet another 18 month contract, especially when I don’t use the included minutes and text messages that I’m paying for now.

Free T-Mobile SIM Card With 1000 Free Texts

March 2, 2009

T-Mobile Sim CardIn the past I’ve mentioned that you can get a free T-Mobile SIM card on Pay As You Go (PAYG), that way you are no longer tied to being on a contract paying a monthly line rental fee – I‘ve recently gone back onto PAYG myself and certainly for me I’m finding it the cheaper option as we’re all looking for ways to save money these days.

With that in mind, T-Mobile are currently running a special offer whereby you not only get a free T-Mobile SIM card, but you can also receive 1000 free texts as part of the deal – all you need to do is top-up your new SIM card by the 30th April 2009 and the 1000 free texts will then be added to your PAYG SIM card within 28 days.

iPhone 3G PAYG

September 21, 2008

iphone-3gThe iPhone 3G has now gone on sale on Pay As You Go (PAYG) in the UK on the O2 network, this is great news for those people who don’t like being tied to a long contract (18 months in the case of the iPhone 3G) and also for people like me who already have a contract, it opens up the market for more potential customers for the iPhone 3G and O2.

When the original iPhone was released last year, I have to admit that I wasn’t overly impressed by it due to some of its limitations – no 3G, no GPS, a poor camera, reports of poor signal reception due to the metal back on it. Sure it had a great innovative touchscreen interface, but like many things from Apple in my experience, you’re often better off not getting the first generation of a product as an updated model seems to come along quite quickly.

3 Mobile Broadband (UK)

August 17, 2008

3-mobile-broadband-usb-dongleYou might be thinking “why do I need 3 mobile broadband internet?” – Well I’ve recently come to realise that this would be a great addition to my gadget bag, it means I don’t need to rely on the places I visit having wireless internet access. For instance, many coffee shops/hotels still do not provide any form of wireless broadband internet, or if they do, it is often charged at an expensive rate.

Therefore by having a 3 mobile broadband USB dongle (card), it gives you the convenience of working/surfing the internet anywhere with a mobile network signal, in my experience there are very few places these days that don’t have any signal at all. It also makes for a great backup in the event your ADSL or cable connection go down and you still need to access the Internet, particularly important if it involves your work!

Free 3 Sim Card

July 11, 2008

3-mobile-logoMy attention now turns to a free 3 sim card in what seems like a never-ending quest to find the best Pay As You Go (PAYG) bargain deal on the various mobile phone networks.

In the past I have never seriously considered the 3 mobile network because I was always under the false impression that you needed to be situated in a city to actually get any signal on the 3 network.

However, I was recently speaking to a friend of mine who has a mobile phone on 3 and he has recommended that I should definitely take a look at getting a free 3 sim card if at all possible, since their network coverage is usually much better than some other networks, specifically in our area the T-Mobile and Vodafone networks are a bit hit and miss – to the point there is no signal at all sometimes.

Free Tesco Mobile Sim Card

May 19, 2008

I was recently talking to a friend of mine who had got a free Tesco SIM card for her mobile phone, she has recently got sick of paying out each month and being bound to a contract with one of the main large mobile networks which just did not give her value for money.

Tesco (the UK Supermarket) has been selling Pay As You Go mobile phones for a number of years now, they began by selling PAYG handsets of the major networks, but in recent times they have been mobile phone handsets on their own branded Tesco Mobile network – which actually uses the O2 network much like Virgin Mobile uses T-Mobile.

Free Virgin SIM Card

April 21, 2008

virgin-media-logoWhen I saw that you could get a free Virgin SIM card for your existing mobile phone, I thought I’d may as well get one and see what Virgin Mobile is like as a ‘Pay As You Go’ (PAYG) mobile phone network, especially since my current Orange contract expires this week!

When you receive your free Virgin SIM card (with monthly payments starting at £15, but no long contracts) you will then be able to take advantage of the following PAYG tariff:

  • Pick up more minutes and texts than you would with a contract
  • Keep your phone and number
  • No long-term contract – you aren’t tied-in to a lengthy contract
  • Plus some neat extras like free voicemail in the UK and free itemised online statements

Free Orange SIM Card

April 3, 2008

Orange Sim CardI’ve been looking at getting a free Orange SIM card recently because my current Orange contract finishes at the end of this month. I’m considering going back onto ‘pay as you go’ (PAYG) given my relatively low usage in terms of making calls and only send around 30 texts a month on average.

The tariff on this free Orange SIM card seems to be quite reasonable if your usage of your mobile phone is fairly low, based on the following tariff costs, I think I’d definitely be paying less per month than the line rental that I’m currently paying on my Orange contract.

Free Vodafone SIM Card

March 22, 2008

Free Vodafone SIM CardWhy am mentioning a pay as you go Free Vodafone SIM Card again? Well, I recently wrote about a couple of cheap – well make that free ways of getting some free sim cards for your mobile phone.

These kind of offers are especially good if you’re now at the end of your contract and just want to put a PAYG sim card in your mobile. It’s almost a year since I originally wrote about getting free Vodafone SIM cards and thought it might be good to just re-cap on the offers that are available as they do change over time.
