Palm Pre – Palm Smartphone Is Back?

When you think of a smart phone you automatically think of the iPhone, the Blackberry Storm/Bold and ever impressive HTC offerings. In fact even the Nokia E71 and G1 often come to mind before any Palm product, which considering how big a role Palm has played in the smartphone sector is a little worrying. But hopefully things are about to change with their new release just revealed at the CES – the Palm Pre.

The Palm Pre is aiming to break into the top of the market, and hopefully dislodge the iPhone, it is a radical step forward from the previous Treo phone as it embraces multi-touch, wireless charging and a sleek sliding design. The Operating System has been revamped as well so that it now not only integrates better with sources (such as computers, e-mail or Facebook) but includes ‘gesture’ control which Palm claims will dramatically increase ease of use.

The iPhone and the Windows Guy

It’s a bit of a strange one, this. I was going to write a straight review of the iPhone 2.2 Firmware, but I don’t think the circumstances under which I came to use it really qualify me to write a fair review, so I won’t. Instead, I’ll tell you about my experiences with Firmware 2.2, which I hope is perhaps just as interesting.

I’ve never paid a penny for an iPhone, and the one I have now is an 8GB first-gen model which was given to me by my Dad, who’s decided that he doesn’t need all the bells and whistles and just wants a phone (I know exactly how he feels).

Obviously it doesn’t work as a phone anymore, but it still works over Wi-Fi and functions in every way, apart from voice calls, cellular data and SMS. It’s not got GPS or any of the other enhancements in the new generation of iPhone 3Gs and this is the primary reason I chose not to do a straight review, because a lot of my iPhones failings may because of the hardware, so to make summary judgment over the Firmware alone would perhaps be unfair.

Anyway, the iPhone is basically a big fat lie.

iPhone 3G PAYG

The iPhone 3G has now gone on sale on Pay As You Go (PAYG) in the UK on the O2 network, this is great news for those people who don’t like being tied to a long contract (18 months in the case of the iPhone 3G) and also for people like me who already have a contract, it opens up the market for more potential customers for the iPhone 3G and O2.

When the original iPhone was released last year, I have to admit that I wasn’t overly impressed by it due to some of its limitations – no 3G, no GPS, a poor camera, reports of poor signal reception due to the metal back on it. Sure it had a great innovative touchscreen interface, but like many things from Apple in my experience, you’re often better off not getting the first generation of a product as an updated model seems to come along quite quickly.

3 Mobile Broadband Review (UK)

You might be thinking “why do I need 3 mobile broadband internet?” – Well I’ve recently come to realise that this would be a great addition to my gadget bag, it means I don’t need to rely on the places I visit having wireless internet access. For instance, many coffee shops/hotels still do not provide any form of wireless broadband internet, or if they do, it is often charged at an expensive rate.

Therefore by having a 3 mobile broadband USB dongle (card), it gives you the convenience of working/surfing the internet anywhere with a mobile network signal, in my experience there are very few places these days that don’t have any signal at all. It also makes for a great backup in the event your ADSL or cable connection go down and you still need to access the Internet, particularly important if it involves your work!
