March 9, 2010

Nike+ Running Sensor & iPhone App Review

March 8, 2010

nike-plus-trainer-sensor-iphone-ipodNike paired up with Apple to produce, what I think, is a great piece of running kit to encourage you to get out and about, walking or running.

What is the Nike+ Sensor for?

The Nike+ sensor and iPhone app track your running progress while you’re out and about through distance, speed and calories. It’s a little like the stats given to you while running on a treadmill. It’s great to have those milestones to help you keep going, even while listening to music. The app gives you stats to take away and feel good about.

Altec Lansing InMotion Max Portable iPod Speakers Review

January 13, 2010

I was absolutely delighted to receive these Altec Lansing InMotion Max Portable iPod Speakers for Christmas. After comparing what was on offer for a long time, there were several options that interested me but in the end, all but this just had something missing.

The first thing that struck me about these speakers are their sharp edges and stylish touch sensitive buttons. In the iPod speakers department it is one of the best looking I’ve come across. It has an interesting colour scheme with mostly black mesh covering the speakers themselves with a subtle orange labelling the buttons and lighting the mini LED screen. Unfortunately (perhaps a little pedantic), it has trouble displaying names such as Bublé, with an accent. Instead it gives you an unintelligible splatter of symbols.

The LED screen is one of the features which set these speakers apart from the crowd. OK it’s not a must have feature, but it is a nice addition and provides some extra functionality. Particularly as most iPods dim the screen after leaving them for any length of time. It’s nice to know the song information as you listen to them.

littlewoods-logoLittlewoods has long been one of the most familiar of catalogue retailers in the UK and in recent years have taken that retailing experience into the online arena by offering their customers the opportunity to shop from their Littlewoods website while offering specific online promotions and voucher codes.

CopyTrans Manager Review (iTunes Alternative)

November 24, 2009

copy-trans-manager-logoApple’s iPod has never been as popular, accounting for over 70% of the MP3 player market in its many forms and having a larger library of games than the PSP and Nintendo DS put together. That means that over 70% of MP3 owners are using iTunes to manage music on their iPod’s then right? I personally don’t know anybody who doesn’t use iTunes to manage their digital music collection, in fact I use iTunes myself, but there are more alternatives than people think. One of these alternatives is CopyTrans Manager, which offers a bulk free way to get your music on and off your iPod and is available for Windows XP, Vista and 7.

During my testing, CopyTrans manager worked great with everything I threw at it, namely an iPhone 3G, iPod Touch (1st Gen), iPod Nano (4th Gen) and an older iPod Nano (2nd Gen). The interface is fairly easy to navigate and brings up the contents of your iPod almost immediately after connection.

USB Turntable: Bring Vinyl Records Into The MP3 Age!

October 15, 2009

usb-vinyl-turntableWhy would you want a USB Turntable you might asking? Well one surprising development in recent years has been the revival of vinyl records – for any younger readers: this was a forerunner of CDs, ask your dad. Although it remained popular with DJs, most music fans had long since consigned their collections to the back of a cupboard, where they remained unheard and gathering dust because there wasn’t a simple, cost effective way of transferring the material into a digital format. Fortunately, that is no longer the case; there are devices you can use to upload your record collection to your computer, or even your iPod, with ease.

iPod Nano 5th Generation Review

October 7, 2009

apple-ipod-nano-5th-genI’ve spent quite a lot of time with the latest 5th generation of the iPod Nano since its release last month, and found it to be a welcome addition to Apple’s holiday line-up with a host of welcome features including what must be Apple’s most leaked update to an iPod with the addition of a video camera.

First Impressions

The new Nano is available in two capacities, 8GB and 16GB, priced at £115 and £135 respectively, available in 9 different colours. The first thing you’ll notice about the new model is a bigger screen and a smaller click wheel. The screen is now 2.2” big, with a strange resolution of 240 x 376, compared to the previous resolution of 240 x 320.

I’ve never been able to watch a full length movie on the Nano, and despite the slight increase in screen estate, I still can’t, but it’s great for watching a short TV show, a video podcast or a few music videos very comfortably. I found the aluminium enclosure to be very durable, as the first thing I did (accidentally of course) was drop the Nano from about 4 feet on to a hard floor with no noticeable damage to the casing or hardware.

SharePod Review (Transfer Files From iPod To Computer Without iTunes)

September 26, 2009

sharepod-logo-tagline-titleLet me talk you through one of my worst nightmares. I wipe my computer a lot for various reasons, but often have one machine that’s left completely untouched. There are times, however, where for whatever reason I re-install the OS on that untouched machine, which happens to link in to the aforementioned nightmare… I’ve been collecting music on my iPod for years, and my iTunes library is just over 30GB in size, not counting any of my TV shows or movies. If I forget to back up my library and format my hard drive, then I’m screwed.

That was the exact situation I was in a few weeks ago. My iTunes library was gone, and I needed some way to get all the files off my iPod and on to my hard drive. If you re-install iTunes and sync your iPod with an empty library, you’ll just end up with an empty iPod, and then you HAVE lost your music! Before you start panicking about your precious music collection being lost though, try a program called SharePod.

New Apple iPod Nano, Touch, Classic And Shuffle Announced

September 10, 2009

apple-its-only-rock-and-roll-eventLast week we brought you the rumours surrounding the much anticipated Apple iPod event taglined “It’s only rock and roll, but we like it”, and today 09/09/09 we finally found out what what they were planning – and as it turns out we were half right!

Although the rock-and-roll quote and the fact that the date that coincided with the release of Beatles: Rock Band were red herrings, not only were the rumors about the camera true, but the additions to the iPod Touch and general software updates were also well predicted. So, with the Nano, Touch, Shuffle and Classic being changed here’s a quick overview of them all.

New iPod Shuffle Goes Minimalist

March 13, 2009

apple-ipod-shuffle-small-talkA couple of weeks ago we brought you the newest Apple versions of the iMac and Mac Mini, so it is no surprise that they have no revealed the newest version of the iPod range. However, for a change, it isn’t the constantly renewing Nano, iPod touch or the bog standard iPod. It is the lesser spotted iPod shuffle.

We haven’t seen a new version of the relatively successful shuffle since September 2006, which if you are an Apple fan is a long time. But there is a good reason for this: there is only so much you can do with a MP3 player with a set design, tiny form factor and no GUI.
