March 7, 2010

voi-lorem-iphone-case-black-smallWhen you live in a world filled with expensive gadgets and gizmos, you’re going to want to protect that shiny new hi-tech gadget investment of yours! The iPhone is by far the most popular smartphone on the planet, but even the folks from Cupertino can’t protect your phone from the everyday beatings it will undoubtedly endure.

With many iPhone covers and cases on the market, it may be hard to choose how you want to protect your iPhone, but the VOi ‘Lorem’ iPhone Case one that’s certainly caught my eye and is rather effective at keeping your indispensable iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS from cracking (literally) under the pressure of everyday life…

How to Reset/Restore Your iPhone 3G/3GS

March 2, 2010

iphone-3gs-front-back-242In the past I’ve written about my experiences of Apple’s big iPhone 3.0 software update in which I’ve had my doubts over useful the update itself was and found that after two months I had to try to restore my (then) iPhone 3G PAYG as I suspected (or hoped) the problems I had were due to some corrupted files and not a hardware fault.

Now as much as I like to do my fair share of Apple-bashing like any decent PC user and coupled with the highly annoying iTunes sluggishness we experience in Windows, I have to admit that they have made managing your iPhone day-to-day in terms of synchronising, backing up and restoring it when needed very simple and effective.

Unfortunately, iPhones are not without their faults, issues and problems like any other mobile phone or mini-computer, the worst one I’ve experienced a few times now is everytime you try to start an app, it would then immediately crash! Handy eh? Suffice to say, I’ve had plenty of opportunities to become familiar with restoring and resetting the two iPhones that I’ve owned so far.

Altec Lansing InMotion Max Portable iPod Speakers Review

January 13, 2010

I was absolutely delighted to receive these Altec Lansing InMotion Max Portable iPod Speakers for Christmas. After comparing what was on offer for a long time, there were several options that interested me but in the end, all but this just had something missing.

The first thing that struck me about these speakers are their sharp edges and stylish touch sensitive buttons. In the iPod speakers department it is one of the best looking I’ve come across. It has an interesting colour scheme with mostly black mesh covering the speakers themselves with a subtle orange labelling the buttons and lighting the mini LED screen. Unfortunately (perhaps a little pedantic), it has trouble displaying names such as Bublé, with an accent. Instead it gives you an unintelligible splatter of symbols.

The LED screen is one of the features which set these speakers apart from the crowd. OK it’s not a must have feature, but it is a nice addition and provides some extra functionality. Particularly as most iPods dim the screen after leaving them for any length of time. It’s nice to know the song information as you listen to them.

iPhone 3GS Review

January 13, 2010

Everyone’s seen an iPhone, and most people want one, but can you tell the difference between an iPhone 3G and an iPhone 3GS? The answer is most certainly no; they look identical to each other and are no different to the naked eye. Once you’ve used an iPhone 3GS, however, you’ll realise just how different it is.

It’s been around 6 months since the iPhone 3GS was released and at the time many people thought that it was somewhat of a low-key upgrade from the iPhone 3G, certainly it was more of an evolution than a revolution, especially when you consider what some of the 3rd generation iPhone rumours that had been going around prior to Apple’s announcement in which they introduced us to the iPhone 3GS.

So what can be added to our previous review of the iPhone 3G? Well here’s the key improvements that we’ve come to appreciate in using the iPhone 3GS, especially if you now go back to using an iPhone 3G – these differences are then immediately obvious!

September 28, 2009

iphone-on-orange-network-2009Good news everyone! The iPhone’s exclusivity deal with O2 is over and we’ll be seeing the iPhone available on the Orange network before the end of the year!

Orange have announced that they now have an agreement with Apple to offer the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS to Orange customers later this year in 28 countries and territories. Within the UK they will be sold via all direct Orange channels including Orange shops, the Orange website, and Orange telesales, in addition to other selected high street partners.

iPhone 3.0: The Dark Side – Part 2

August 18, 2009

bad-apple-skull“Bring On The Pain!”

Ages ago now (sorry), realising that I couldn’t really say what I had intended to say about Apple without actually going through the “fail” process for myself after writing iPhone 3.0: The Dark Side – Part 1, I decided to sacrifice my un-activated 1.0 iPhone in the name of science, and upgraded the firmware to iPhone 3.0. Here’s how it went…

I connected the iPhone to my PC, then waited the 45 minutes or so it takes for Apple’s flagship product to load in Windows. It duly reported that a firmware update was available, so I chose to install and waited. After downloading and installing, the iPhone re-booted and reported that it was waiting to be activated. “That’s all folks!” I thought, but after 2 minutes of sitting doing nothing, my iPhone gave up trying to activate and just turned on and worked.

iPhone 3G Available On Other UK Networks? (Rumour)

July 14, 2009

iphone-3gThere’s apparently more talk, or shall we say rumours that Apple might be in talks with other mobile phone networks that would see O2 lose their exclusivity deal on the iPhone 3G handset. The UK networks in question could well be Orange and T-Mobile, both of which would no doubt be eager to get the now entry-level iPhone 3G handset available to their customers.

I’m sure there’s a lot of people out there who have ended up on the O2 network simply because they wanted an iPhone and had no choice in the matter – I know I certainly have, before I got my iPhone 3G PAYG, I’d been with Orange for nearly 10 years and for the most part I would have been happy enough to remain with them had they been able to offer me the iPhone at the time, especially since the Orange network signal is better in my local area.

iPhone 3.0: The Dark Side – Part 1

June 21, 2009

iphone-dr-evilI know what you’re thinking.

Here’s the Windows Nerd, back for another round of Apple bashing. Well let me get a few things straight right now before we begin. I own an iPhone and more than that, I think it pretty excellent. There is absolutely nothing out there that even comes close to the intuitive user interface, the plethora of fantastic apps and the sheer usability of what is quite simply, the best phone ever made. Am I going to use an awkward, clunky Windows Mobile interface, or am I going to use an iPhone? Hmm, tough call isn’t it?

iPhone 3.0 Update: The Dark Side – Teaser

June 19, 2009

apple-nasty-bite-fangsThe system you use has left it’s scent on you. Do not forget who it is that you serve…

No one on this planet has ever bought an iPhone. While experienced users fumble with shitty firmware migration and Apple bigots rave over the most superficial and fundamental enhancements, let’s not forget the elephant in the room. As good as the iPhone is, your use of it depends on the continuing flow of money from your bank account to your cell provider. Don’t think for a minute that your iPhone won’t eventually turn to a brick, because I personally guarantee that in time, it will.

iPhone 3GS Upgrade Cost Farce

June 9, 2009

iphone-3gs-front-back-242So, the eagerly anticipated new iPhone 3GS release happened last night (well, BST anyway) and my, wasn’t everyone a little peeved! Although I spent most of my time chuckling at the hordes of people infecting my Twitter account with talk of the same damn thing, I found solace in knowing that none of it affected me. I have avoided the iPhone so far, but in the last few months have really had urges to own one.

It turns out that O2 aren’t happy with their ridiculous monopoly over the iPhone and want to still charge their loyal customers hundreds of pounds to upgrade to the shiny new 3rd generation toy. You know what means, right? Yep – Twitter has been overrun once again with complaints from all sides of the UK.
