Google Nexus One Review (UK)

February 15, 2010

Google’s new ‘superphone’, the Nexus One, has been the topic of many conversations since its release a day before CES began in January. Released subsidised in the US, and also available unlocked to the UK, Singapore and Hong Kong from Google directly, it comes packed with a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 512MB RAM and a 5MP camera (more on that later on).

Shipping and Initial Setup

The cost of the phone from Google is $529, although you’ll also have to consider international shipping costs of $29.65. DHL’s tracking service was great to have when biting my nails to see where my phone was, although it took an extra day to arrive after landing in the UK due to a shipping mix up – it was destined for Gatwick instead of Manchester, but I was just grateful that my Nexus One didn’t end up in Uganda

HTC Magic Review

May 11, 2009

htc-magic-vodafone-handset-frontVodafone have released the HTC Magic, but the question is, have they got their exclusive hands on a “magical handset”? Back in February as part of our smartphones series we had a look at the T-Mobile G1 which was the first to have the much hailed Google Android operating system, and although the O/S was impressive the hardware wasn’t; but now it is time for the second wave of Android phones, and the first of them is the HTC Magic.

The Taiwanese telecommunications company have been on the rise recently with the HTC Touch HD, Pro and Diamond all receiving acclaim and success. So who better to have a crack at getting the best out of Android; and let’s face it they couldn’t do any worse could they?

Top Smartphones For Business (2009)

February 24, 2009

top-smartphones-feb-2009Over the last few weeks we’ve been looking at the best smartphones on the market at the moment with the aim of finding the best one out there, and we have covered the T-Mobile G1, Blackberry Storm, Blackberry Bold, Nokia E71, HTC Touch HD and the iPhone 3G. So now it is time to bring all of those reviews together for a final showdown.

But for all of the things they have in common they are, like most things, very hard to compare. This is mostly due to the versatility of smartphones – not only can you use them for business but they are making headway into the home market – which makes it very hard to judge which smartphone you should buy. So I’ve split this final post into two sections: Business and Leisure.

Firstly let’s have a look at the more traditional purpose of the Smartphone: business. I will first give you the runner up, and then the final winner with a quick word as to why it’s won.

T-Mobile G1 Review

February 18, 2009

t-mobile-g1So as we come to the end of our overview of the smartphone world (which has included the Blackberry Storm, Blackberry Bold, Nokia E71, HTC Touch HD and the iPhone 3G) and we meet the T-Mobile G1 – The first Google Phone! This has got to be the only phone where the operating system (O/S) has created more interest than the phone. Having said that the phone has been the centre of much attention and not all of it is without good reason.

Firstly a little background: the phone is technically called the HTC Dream (you may recognise HTC from their Touch HD) as they, along with some input from Google’s design team, designed the hardware. But what makes this phone special is that it is the first example of Google’s Android O/S which promised to be stylish, packed with features and built completely with touchscreens in mind; so it looked good, but the end result was a phone of two halves.

HTC Touch HD Review

January 23, 2009

htc-touch-hdBy now you will know what smartphones are and what we are looking for in a top smartphone, but does the HTC Touch HD have what it takes? They are becoming increasingly popular not only in the business sector but also for those who just want an ultimate phone. We’ve looked at the iPhone 3G which is widely accepted as the market leader, but what have the rest of the pack got to offer and do they even compete with the iPhone’s usability and design?

We move onto the HTC Touch HD which is the latest offering from the portable computing manufacturer, and at first look it is quite impressive. It has a nice black design and makes full use of it with a large touchscreen taking up most of the front of the phone, and like the iPhone there isn’t a QWERTY keyboard in sight.

Free Downloadable Ringtones (Windows Mobile)

October 7, 2008

windows-mobile-logoWhat’s this? Microsoft are giving away free downloadable ringtones for Windows Mobile? Well I recently upgraded the operating system on my HTC Tytn II to Windows Mobile 6.1 and in so doing I ended up registering with Microsoft as a Windows Mobile user which means I’ve been receiving a monthly email with the latest news and applications that’s available for my HTC Tytn II.

As part of Microsoft’s Windows Mobile site, there’s section that contains free downloadable ringtones that you can download and use on your smartphone/mobile phone. There are plenty of different categories to choose from, you can preview and play the ringtone before downloading.

Windows Mobile 6.1 – Orange Tytn II

September 14, 2008

htc-tytn-iiOrange recently released their Windows Mobile 6.1 update for the Orange Tytn II which is available for you to download and install on your mobile phone.

Installing Windows Mobile 6.1 onto my Orange Tytn II was the first time that I’d actually attempted to update the operating system software installed on a mobile phone and as such I was a cautious about it – the last thing I wanted to do was screw up my mobile phone which was working perfectly well.

Windows Mobile 6.1 features the following upgrades and new features for your Windows-based smartphone:

Google Maps for Blackberry / Mobile Phone

June 10, 2008

google-maps-logoI recently installed the latest version of the Google Maps download for a mobile phone / Blackberry onto my new HTC Tytn II Windows Mobile handset and have been further impressed by how well this free piece of software works and how useful it actually can be.

I previously had an Orange E650 (a branded HTC S710 Vox handset) which ran Windows Mobile 6 and as such I installed Google Maps on that, however I must admit that I never really used it due to a combination of slow data speeds (it wasn’t a 3G device) and the fact that the data usage charges on my tariff were quite expensive.
