Family Gamer: Dad’s Edition

June 14, 2008

family-gamer-logoDads are a tricky subject. Some are loving and inspiring whilst others absent and off hand. Some are communicative and open, whilst others are as hard to fathom as the depths of Loch Ness. Some are in touch with their creativity and at ease with their feminine side, whilst others are purely manly. Although the people I’ve got to know through Family Gamer talk about their dads in different ways, they all seem to agree that they make up a big part of what it is to be a family.

Family Gamer: Play Less

June 11, 2008

family-gamerZath: “Here’s a guest post from Paul Govan who will be guest-posting here on Zath! on a regular basis as I’m syndicating some of Game People’s great content. Paul’s got some great thoughts on family gaming and I hope you enjoy reading what he has to say about his experiences of being a gamer.”

I feel like Jerry Maguire today. After many years chasing my tail reviewing whatever game I could lay my hands on I have decided to take a break from the rat race. In the words of the man himself “Let us work less hard to [play] the [games] that we know won’t matter in the long run, and work twice as hard to [play] the ones who will.” So I’ll be here every other week for these Family Gamer articles, trying to get down in words the things that matter to me as a family gamer.

Zath Welcomes Mike to the Team

June 8, 2008

Just a quick post to introduce another new member to the writing team here on Zath!

Mike is a good friend of mine who I work with in my day job - he’s a real personality and has a great sense of humour and hopefully that will come across in his blog posts to you. He’s a big games player of World of Warcraft, Nintendo Wii and his Nintendo DS.

Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass

June 7, 2008

zelda-hourglassMy friends laughed when I told them I’d bought Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass for my Nintendo DS. “Kiddies game” they said and warned me about a lot of text chat spieled of by Manga looking characters while needing a walkthrough to really advance through the game.

Golden Axe: Beast Rider Trailer

June 2, 2008

golden-axe-beast-rider-logoWhen I remember back to playing on my Commodore Amiga in the earlier days of my gaming, one of the most memorable games has to be the arcade-style Golden Axe! For me one of the best things about this game was the fact that it had co-operative gameplay which really was quite rare back then and really made this game rather unique and fun to play with your friends.

Just check out the video below which shows the Amiga version and take in the nostalgia of the hack and slash gameplay - not to mention the classic Golden Axe music!

Gamerbase

May 30, 2008

Gamerbase LogoGamerbase is a gaming centre located in the HMV store at the London Trocadero at Piccadilly Circus - they have taken the idea of renting out computers for people to use (much like internet cafés do), but in this case they provide top-of-the-line gaming hardware for people who want to have a great multiplayer gaming experience. I recently had to opportunity to visit Gamerbase while attending a media event for Dell XPS gaming systems and saw first-hand how impressive the hardware and facilities were.

Nintendo DS - Top Games

May 27, 2008

Nintendo DS LiteAfter inheriting a cheap Nintendo DS with “Mr Myagies Brain Breaker” (long story, wont boar you) I set about trying to find myself some cheap games that I actually wanted to play. “Easy task” I thought, “The DS has been out for ages” I said, “cheap second hand stuff will be kicking about everywhere” I told my missus.

How wrong could I have been. Even the dodgy second hand stuff from the dreaded eBay was gonna cost me at least 1 nights beer money. There had to be a solution!? Ok it’s an old solution, but make sure when you do buy a game that it is one of the Nintendo DS’s top games!

Zath Premiership 07/08 - End of Season Results!

May 23, 2008

Premiership TrophyThe Zath Premiership recently reached the finishing line after a long, hard season that has run in parallel with and was based upon the English Premier League football season.

In the previous season, Zath Premiership 06/07 was won by my very own team, the mighty Zath Rovers - I even won on merit with no cheating or paying off of goalkeepers or anything else that the tabloids could have made up to take the shine off my title win! ;)

WiiWare Games Are Here!

May 20, 2008

Wiiware Game Lost WindsThis morning I downloaded my first WiiWare game, ‘Lost Winds’. I’ve been waiting quite a while for Nintendo’s new channel to come out and I’m glad it’s here!

WiiWare is the same as the virtual console, only the games are all brand new and made by smaller games companies, to give them a chance to show what they can do!
