Sony Ericsson Aspen Launched – A Green Windows Mobile!

February 6, 2010

Sony Ericsson really seem to be releasing a lot of new handsets just recently, for instance the SE Satio, SE Vivaz and now with the Sony Ericsson Aspen.

Whilst the green revolution continues to trickle its way through the tech world it has been a while since we’ve covered a product that aims to be at the top of the field in functionality and style, but still remain environmentally sound at its core so it’s a nice change to see the release of the Sony Ericsson Aspen, which aims to do just that!

Ignoring the green aspects for a moment and you’ll see that the Aspen is a QWERTY smartphone which also incorporates the ease of a touchscreen and which comes with all the functionality you’d expect from a ‘high end’ phone including the latest version of Windows Mobile.

Alien Abduction Lamp – Shed Light On Cow-Nappings!

November 28, 2009

alien-abduction-cow-lampThe Alien Abduction Lamp is an extremely realistic LED lamp which will almost have you believe that a cow is being abducted in your room! A high quality metal lamp with energy saving LED’s that provide great amounts of light in a ‘fun’ way without enlarging your carbon footprint.

The UFO is made from high quality steel with a ‘pearl black’ finish which is aesthetically pleasing and the windows which alternate between a green and yellow glow. Inside lies a stereotypical green alien with a flat face, huge eyes and no eyelids. The cow being abducted is actually removable so perhaps you can pretend that it has already been and gone.

BenQ LED Eco Monitors Released For Under £100

November 25, 2009

benq-led-eco-monitorAs we near the Copenhagen conference the glare of public interest is shifting from the financially deprived recession to the environmentally deprived globe, and yet again eco warriors are back on the agenda – so what better time to release some LED monitors that fit nicely into both categories?

The snappily named BenQ G920WL and G922HDL (yes, that is sarcasm!) both line themselves up as the eco-option which I’m sure will prove popular, and the same can be said for the pricing, but let’s have a look at the specs first.

The only real difference between the two is the size of them: the G920WL is the larger of the two and weighs in with and 19 inch screen, 16:10 ration and 1440 x 900 WXGA+ resolution whilst the ever so slightly smaller G922HDL is 18.5 inches and thus has a 16:9 ration with a slightly diminished resolution of 1366 x 768.

Fiat Eco-Drive Promotes Economical & Environmentally Friendly Driving

October 27, 2009

fiat-eco-drive-logoSeveral weeks ago, you may have read my previous article on my current 5 favourite Adobe Air apps. Well, I guess it’s not just for personal use after all. Fiat, the car manufacturer, uses an Adobe AIR based application called ‘Eco-Drive’ on their 500 model to assist drivers in becoming more efficient and ‘green’ – this also adds to the 3 Hi-Tech car advances that I wrote about recently too.

Nokia Plans Self-Charging Mobile Phone!

June 11, 2009

nokia-logoImagine if you will a hypothetical world 10 years in the future where you no longer need to charge your phone, iPod or laptop, they just absorb energy from the air around themselves and convert this into the electricity they need to run.

Admittedly this is more fantasy than reality, but the basic idea is one that Nokia say they have made headway into – and they have the prototype to prove it. By being able to harvest the free energy flying around in our atmosphere (from Wifi, TV and other assorted signals) Nokia plan to be able to convert this into electricity in smartphones in the future, just think, having a smartphone like the Nokia E71 that self-charges!

A Plasma TV Ban In The Future?

January 13, 2009

giant-plasma-tv-1Could a Plasma TV ban really be forthcoming? Well we all know about the massive commitments that the Government has made with regards to carbon emissions for the coming years, most of which have been done through the backing (or rather cajoling) of the EU. But with the growing economic problems, and the large amount of money that the government is spending to bail out failing companies, there is less incentive and money to spend on this issue.

However the green brigade are back, and this time their targets are firmly on something that have been escalating in size and power usage over the last few years, something that is often on and something that we all wish we have: Giant Plasma TV’s such as the LG Plasma TVs and the Pioneer Plasma TVs we’ve recently covered here on Zath. They have been coined the 4×4 of the living room, and that is relatively not far from the truth when you consider that a 42 inch Plasma TV can use around 822 kilowatt hours a year.

The World’s First Carbon Neutral Mobile Phone

January 8, 2009

motorola-renew-w2332009 is a new year where we can expect to seen new trends and new ideas. However expect to see loads more of what has already become big: netbooks, touchscreens and anything green. Motorola’s new “Renew” (W233) mobile phone is a fine example of the kind of things that you can expect to see as the environmentally friendly trend continues.

The W233 Renew is unique because of the fact that it is (as the title suggests) the first carbon neutral phone: helped significantly by the fact that it is made of recycled water bottles. The idea of making products from recycled products isn’t that new, and this isn’t the first time that recycled materials have been used in phones. You may remember the Nokia ‘Remade’ prototype that emerged in February last year, which although was never functioning or sold, did indicate the future for eco-friendly phones.

EcoButton (Computer Standby Button)

August 19, 2008

eco-button-usbThe EcoButton is a cool USB gadget that saves you money and fights global warming! I can practically hear your tuts of disbelief back at Zath HQ. But seriously this little eco-friendly gizmo will do exactly that and even has the balls to gloat about it too!

I am talking about the EcoButton. Essentially it is a large nicely lit button that plugs into a USB port and once clicked puts your machine into “Eco Mode”. This allows your computer to go into a standby mode that only uses 1.8 watts of power (apparently that is loads less then most normal standby modes). “who cares” and “nothing new” I thought when I first saw it, but I decided to look a little deeper.
