‘New Super Mario Bros Wii’ Review

January 3, 2010

When I heard that the Wii was getting some retro Mario treatment after reading the Super Mario Bros Wii preview from the E3 announcement last year, I was rather ecstatic.

I should note that my first encounter with Mario was on the original GameBoy, so despite my excitement I wasn’t sure whether a 2D-based New Super Mario Bros Wii game would work well on a newer console, especially with titles such as Mario Galaxy delivering a 3D update to the old franchise.

As with all Mario games, the objective is to save Princess Peach, who is kidnapped at her birthday party (big surprise there) and need Mario to save her. You navigate around the game, which is broken up into worlds and sub-worlds, by traveling to each sub-world in the kingdom.

Project Natal Release Date & Price Announced?

November 12, 2009

project-natal-hardware-3d-camera-accessoryA release date and price has apparently been unofficially announced for the Xbox 360 motion control system; Project Natal and I have to say I’m quite surprised by them, it will be released at a price of around £50 and has a release date of November 2010 – I personally thought it would be a lot more than this, so if true, this is great news from Microsoft!

When Xbox 360’s Project Natal motion controller system is released there will be 14 games available, but nothing yet on whether any of these will be AAA titles. Lionhead have been working on the Project Natal AI kids known as Milo and Kate so could this be a possible launch title? From what I’ve seen of it, it looks impressive and is one of the many reasons I bought an Xbox 360.

July 5, 2009

tales-of-monkey-island-logoThe time has nearly arrived for the first of the new Monkey Island episodic adventures featuring everyone’s favourite pirate; no not Captain Jack Sparrow, Guybrush Threepwood of course!

The Tales of Monkey Island will be launched with the first chapter, “The Launch of the Screaming Narwal” on the 7th July 2009! I for one am eagerly awaiting the chance to return to this beloved franchise which will see Guybrush a Voodoo Pox that is infecting people across the islands of The Caribbean, including himself!

‘Milo’ Artificial Intelligence – The End Of Society As We Know It?

July 2, 2009

project-natal-milo-1Until about 5 years ago I generally had a good understanding about modern technology but as you know, 5 years is a long time. I don’t think my mobile phone even had a camera back then and my PC had an impressive 8 gig of memory.

Since graduating from university in 2004 I’d say the closest I’ve come to new technology is having a go on my mates’ PS3 and getting a new phone when I renew my contract every 18 months. All I know about AI is what I’ve learned from the Terminator films and watching the clip of the Project Natal “Milo” demo on Zath.

Star Wars: The Old Republic – Bioware E3 Interview

June 23, 2009

star-wars-the-old-republic-logoA few weeks ago we reported on how the cinematic trailer of Star Wars: The Old Republic had been released at E3 2009 – I think from just seeing that it’s clear that Bioware really understands Star Wars and what us fans really want see in a massively multiplayer online (MMO) game set in the Star Wars universe.

In this interview two of the guys from Bioware talk with Gamespot about the history of this game so far, how they’re approaching it and why it will be different from the other MMO games currently on the market – every character in the game will be fully-voiced to help create the many stories and involvement that your character will have in the Old Republic – no more reading what characters are saying and having stories that only last as long as a short quest as you might expect in a game like World of Warcraft.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 Fail?

June 16, 2009

super-mario-galaxy-bee-marioIf you’re looking for awesomeness with this next installment of Super Mario Galaxy you may be in for a slight… okay, perhaps, epic disappointment. Miyamoto has recently revealed his plans for the new game saying, “I’ve always felt that the Mario games themselves aren’t particularly suited to having a very heavy story.” With this, he goes on to describe the simplicity of the games, which remind us why the game is so popular in the first place.

E3 2009 Roundup

June 8, 2009

e3-logoWell the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) is over for another year, we’d hoped for good things in our E3 2009 Preview, but what can we take away from this year’s event? I think it’s fair to say that E3 2009 was back to its best after the last couple of years of it being scaled back a little too aggressively from what it used to be.

Not only are people excited and talking about E3 2009 in terms of the announcements, previews and demos that were made by the companies that attended the event, but it also seems to once again becoming the gaming industry’s premiere event again which people actually want to attend again – we couldn’t attend E3 this year ourselves personally, but it’s certainly an event that we hope to attend in future years and many other people seem to now have the same opinion. Well done E3, you’re now re-invigorated as an event and your place on the calendar now surely means something to a lot of us once more!

Star Wars: The Old Republic Trailer

June 8, 2009

star-wars-the-old-republic-logoThe first Star Wars: The Old Republic trailer was unveiled at E3 2009, it’s cinematic in nature and is presumably the setting the scene for what will be the scenario in which the game takes place.

It was late last year that Star Wars: The Old Republic was announced by Lucasarts and Bioware as a new massively multiplayer online (MMO) game that would be set in the distant past of the Old Republic thousands of years before the time of the Star Wars movies and the events that most people are familiar with, except of course for those of us who have played the Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR) games in the past.

Project Natal – ‘Milo’ Artificial Intelligence

June 5, 2009

project-natal-milo-1We recently did a post about Microsoft’s new motion control system titled ‘Project Natal’. From what I’ve seen, it looks like it could be great fun to use because of being able to use your entire body rather than just remotes.

After delving a little further for information, I came across Peter Molyneux’s ‘Milo’. An artificial intelligence character that can interact with you through Natal. I have to say, I’m absolutely amazed from what I’ve seen as it’s not even 50% complete yet. But on the other hand, I’m a little freaked out by the potential of this new technology. But…….it’s genius!
