Going Straight: A Solution To Internet Piracy? – Part 3

March 3, 2009

apple-piracy-skull-crossbonesAll right then, let’s get this over with. I’ve said a lot of bad things about Apple, but that’s because they deserve it. I’m not out to make enemies here, but as Robin Williams said “if you were right, I would agree with you”. In my opinion, Apple are a horrid, holier-than-thou, “also-ran” green-eyed-monster in the computing world. They know it too, and it’s evident in everything they do.

Although this short-falling doesn’t extend in to their rich-media offerings, the same paranoid, insular philosophy does. Quick to judge, slow to change. It’s amazing they’ve survived, but look at what they’re up against. Music Match Jukebox? What a pile of arse-biscuit that was. Why Sony isn’t king of on-line music and video is still a total mystery to me.

Going Straight: A Solution To Internet Piracy? – Part 2

lime-lemon-yellow-greenThe Cornucopia of Crap

Most file sharers are at least one of the following: Haplessly ignorant, idiots, con-artists, trolls, kids, liars, careless, uneducated, and yes, criminals. I really couldn’t care less about any of this, except that it really does directly relate to the quality of their output.

Now as I type this, I can almost feel the indignation of countless file-sharers out there who successfully download many acceptable pirate copies of all and sundry. If that’s you, I would suggest that PC run-time is not a factor for you and you’re not very discerning over quality and consistency. You also either really know what you’re doing, or you’re just plain lucky. Let me make it clear here: unless you absolutely know what it is you’re downloading, there is no virus protection or malware prevention tool in existence which will guarantee protection when you open the file.

Going Straight: A Solution To Internet Piracy? – Part 1

February 16, 2009

internet-piracyArr, me hearties! I’ve been known to partake of the plentiful bounty in my 30-odd years, but as Nicholson said “never rub another man’s rhubarb!”, and that isn’t a bad idea. So is it really possible to straighten up and fly right? (and actually obey the mad, crazy-ass law?) Well, sort of…

I’m law-abiding in the same way that vegetarians eat fish. That means, I’m very principled, unless I don’t like it or it somehow makes my life just a little harder. Therefore, I copy (rip) movies which I own for my own use on the various devices I own. Obviously, I won’t tell you how to do this here, but since many of you are doing it anyway, it matters very little. You’re all breaking the law and you’re all going to hell. Oh well, change is as good as a rest isn’t it? Apart from the copy of “Loose Change” which I still have somewhere, this is the most illegal thing I (or most of us) do, and if you’re prepared to stand your corner against corporate bullying, it might not be illegal at all.

Play TV Demo

September 13, 2008

play-tv-logoI’ve just downloaded a demo of Play TV for the Playstation 3. The Play TV demo is a digital tuner for use with the PS3 and allows you to watch and record digital programmes onto your HDD, the same as Freeview recorders or Sky+.

The menu is very basic and easy to navigate around and the guide with all the TV listings was very easy to use as it’s no different from the ones I’ve used previously on Freeview and Sky.

The programmes that are the demo are obviously just demo channels that have already been pre-installed for users to get used to how Play TV works. You can record a programme with one push of the select button, which I found very useful also.

Save Jericho Campaign

May 24, 2008

Jericho Mushroom CloudI recently wrote about the fact that Jericho season 2 had been cancelled and how the fans are once again trying to save the show, however this time round no amount of peanuts being sent to CBS will convince them to produce a season 3.

With this in mind, the fans are organising several efforts on different fronts to show that there is a real market for the Jericho show to other TV networks out there who could potentially bring it back for a 3rd season.

Jericho Season 3?

April 19, 2008

Jericho Mushroom CloudJericho season 3 could still rise from the ashes! CBS may have cancelled Jericho for the second time at the end of the 7 episode long season 2, but that doesn’t mean to say that no other networks or distribution deals can be done!

There are various potential Jericho season 3 deals to be made as IGN recently reported, let’s hope that one of these actually works out!

Future of HD-DVD

March 5, 2008

HD-DVD GravestoneBlu-Ray recently won the format war for high definition discs, which means at least going forward there is a single format for consumers to commit to, but obviously that doesn’t help all those who have HD-DVD players and discs at home. So what now?

September 12, 2007

It’s been a while since I’ve bought DVDs at launch, mainly because if you’re like me and don’t mind waiting a couple of months, they usually end up on sale for around £10 or less anyway.

However, in this case, it’s nice to see a for a chance two of the summer’s big blockbuster movies; ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End’ and ‘Spiderman 3′ on DVD priced at just £9.98 each for these 2-disc editions = cheap bargains!
