Dell’s Della – Patronising Twaddle or Useful Social Engineering?

May 27, 2009

dell-della-header-logoWhen people claim to have consumer electronics made specifically for women, I tend to shudder and walk hurriedly away. I have yet to come across a piece of technology that has been specifically designed to be used, and only used, by a lady (please refrain from the crude jokes about sex toys – I’m clearly not referring to these). What they tend to mean is that the item is now pink. Or is covered in glitter. Or sequins. For me, this usually makes my face scrunch up into a rather goblin-like state, whilst I mutter unpleasant things endlessly until said piece of technology is no longer within my periphery.

Dell Studio Launch Coverage

July 15, 2008

dell-logoFollowing up on my coverage of the recent Dell Studio laptop launch that I attended at the recent Dell Silverstone Formula 1 testing day, I thought I’d just do a quick post rounding up some of the coverage from that day.

My friend Gaj over at Gaj-It.com has done a bit of video editing of some of the various videos that he took on day and created a cool montage video that pretty much covers the events and atmosphere of the day, check it out below:

Dell Event at Formula 1 Silverstone Testing Day

July 12, 2008

zath-helicopterA few weeks ago I was invited by Dell to attend a Silverstone Formula 1 testing day (26th June 2008) which was actually the final testing session before the British Grand Prix took place there just over a week later. The purpose of the day was for launching the new Dell Studio laptops, this would be the second Dell event that I’d been asked to take part in, it was therefore a great opportunity and I gladly accepted.

Only then did I then find out that we’d be getting flown into Silverstone by helicopter – a place, where on the day of the British Grand Prix is the busiest “Heli-port” in the world!

I had to meet up at an Elstree Aerodrome in North London for 8.30am – it meant I had to get up at around 3am – which is probably the earliest I’ve ever had to, so that was bit of a shock to the system! I was out the house and on the road by around 4am – but it would ultimately be a very worthwhile journey!

Dell Dock Software

July 9, 2008

dell-logoThe Dell Dock is a new piece of software that is being installed on new Dell computer systems which provides a customisable navigational ‘shortcut bar’ to help tidy up your desktop and speed up your day-to-day tasks by making it easier to get to where you need to go on your Dell computer.

I had a bit of a play with the Dell Dock when I was at the Dell Studio Laptop launch a couple of weeks ago at a Silverstone Formula 1 testing day. I must say that it seemed very similar to the other ‘dock’ software that you can download and install yourself, not that it’s a bad thing if something works well.

Dell are obviously trying to enhance their customers’ experience of using their newly launched Dell Studio 15 and 17 ranges of laptops with this new feature which will likely be implemented onto other Dell models soon as well. Click the image below to see a more detailed view of the Dell Dock in action.
