Zath’s Technology & Gadget Roundup (20/02/2010)
February 20, 2010
It’s the end of another week in the online world of hi-tech gadgets and technology blogging and as usual there’s been a lot happening out there, so here’s a quick roundup of some of the stuff that we’ve found particularly interesting this week, let us know what you think to them too!
Linux Training Week on Zath – I’m sure we’ve all heard of Linux, but for me personally it’s not something I’ve ever seriously looked at because I always assumed it wasn’t worth the hassle of installation for something that wasn’t that worthwhile, well clearly I was wrong on that one! As you can see from this useful series of articles about the Ubuntu distribution of Linux – it’s easy to setup Ubuntu, it’s an easy to use the Ubuntu interface and there’s lots of software available for Linux.
Heineken Beer-Serving Robot of the Future – oh yes that’s right, in the future we won’t need to get up from the comfort of the sofa, instead the robots will bring the beer to us! This particular robot makes for a great novelty, but it does make you wonder about the potential of robots in the future.
Buy Walkie Talkie Watches? – admittedly walkie talkies aren’t exactly hi-tech these days or even that wanted by people now we all have modern mobile phones such as the iPhone 3GS and Nexus One, but these particular ones can be strapped on your wrist and would make for great free-to-use communication devices if you like to be out in the great outdoors or perhaps having a multi-car roadtrip given they have a range of up to 5km. I just wish I had some of these back when I was a kid!

January 15, 2010
Android’s been in the news a lot so far this month, with the release of the Nexus One just before CES 2010 and with more devices on the way, there hasn’t been a better time to switch to Google’s open source mobile phone platform. The only thing putting me off the purchase of an Android device has been the inability to take my music with me. My iTunes library is over 32GB in size, and the Nexus One comes with a measly 4GB storage via MicroSD, which caps out at 32GB.
For me to be able to carry around my music with me is essential in my decision to purchase a new device, and it seemed that my only option was to sync only certain playlists at a time, which is inconvenient at best. Why Apple don’t have an iTunes streaming application for the iPhone is a mystery to me, but why Google themselves don’t is a major question, with Google being very cloud-centric in their future plans.

September 4, 2009
Whilst the world of the Blackberrys and iPhones maybe becoming more popular, the market for the recession stricken is still present and growing so it comes as no surprise that as the demand for cheaper phones grows. Vodafone is just one of the operators that are answering with their own branded phones that are targeting the market that’s less willing to part with hundreds of pounds.
Hoping to build on the figure of the 20 million handsets shipped under their name, Vodafone have now released eight more which vary as much in purpose as they do in looks. As you can imagine they aren’t particularly revolutionary (that is not to say that there aren’t a couple of surprises) but they’re definitely a varied bunch ranging from an entry level touch screen option to both QWERTY and candy bar styles…

August 30, 2009
The Blackberry Storm had been launched just under a year ago and it was welcomed with criticism from the start. Blackberry needed to come out with something that would stand as good competition against the Apple iPhone 3G, and though the Storm had a sleek look and a touch screen like their rival, it did not wow anyone.
New Blackberry Details Leaked! (Rumours?)
April 8, 2009
As you will remember from our stories on the Top Smartphones feature, Blackberry are a big player in the smartphone world, and have a pretty strong line-up with the Bold and Storm (as well as many of the older models like the Curve and Pearl). So the recent leaks on three new additions to RIM’s 9000-series have drawn quite a lot of attention, and look quite interesting.
What we know is confined to three codenames and a variety of specifications for each; unfortunately we have no idea what they will look like or when they will be released. The three phones are codenamed ‘Onyx’, ‘Driftwood’ and ‘Magnum’, all of which are pretty generic and give away very little as to what they will be like.

February 24, 2009
Over the last few weeks we’ve been looking at the best smartphones on the market at the moment with the aim of finding the best one out there, and we have covered the T-Mobile G1, Blackberry Storm, Blackberry Bold, Nokia E71, HTC Touch HD and the iPhone 3G. So now it is time to bring all of those reviews together for a final showdown.
But for all of the things they have in common they are, like most things, very hard to compare. This is mostly due to the versatility of smartphones – not only can you use them for business but they are making headway into the home market – which makes it very hard to judge which smartphone you should buy. So I’ve split this final post into two sections: Business and Leisure.
Firstly let’s have a look at the more traditional purpose of the Smartphone: business. I will first give you the runner up, and then the final winner with a quick word as to why it’s won.

February 21, 2009
The Blackberry name is now synonymous with smartphones given their huge popularity with business users that allow them to communicate effectively out of the office and that’s one of the reasons why we’ve recently covered the Blackberry Bold and Blackberry Storm in our recent top smartphones set of reviews.
You’ll no doubt have heard that President Obama is a big fan of his Blackberry mobile phone and has had to really insist on being able to continue using one after taking office as President of the United States – the first President to officially use a mobile phone.

February 8, 2009
So far we have covered four of the best smartphones: the Apple iPhone 3G, HTC Touch HD, Nokia E71 and Blackberry Bold 9000, and it is another Blackberry that we take a look at now. Blackberry is a massive company in the smartphone market and it is no surprise that it is the only one with more than one phone in this list – although this may also be a reflection on the inexperience of the other companies in this market.
So moving onto the Blackberry Storm the most obvious question is how different is it from the Bold, and I suppose the most obvious thing is the use of a touchscreen instead of a QWERTY keyboard. This is an attempt to open up a different bit of the market and is Blackberry’s first real attempt at a full touchscreen, obviously prompted by the iPhone.

Of the three top smartphones that we have covered so far (Apple iPhone 3G, HTC Touch HD and the Nokia E71) none come from such a prestigious background as the Bold. Although ‘Blackberry’ only became mainstream in 2002 they did so in style soon winning over the hearts and wallets of millions of businesses and has become the number one company for business phones.
So much so that ‘Blackberry’ has almost become a noun to describe a smartphone; and if you are interested in American news you will also know that President Barack Obama has ‘fought’ to keep his Blackberry amid security warnings. So let’s have a look at the first of the two Blackberry phones we will cover – the Blackberry Bold 9000.

December 10, 2008
I’ve spoken about Viigo: Project Tango a few times now, in case you’re not aware of it, it’s a great little application that you can download and install for free onto your Blackberry or Windows Mobile smartphone and provides you with a host of information and media all on the one application platform.
I’ve currently got this running on my HTC Tytn II mobile phone and use it primarily as a mobile phone news reader as I find it a very useful way of checking RSS feeds. However, this clever little application has developed beyond just that kind and now has lots of other features, such as even downloading audio podcasts should I want to listen to something to stop me from getting bored on long train journeys.
