Windows Phone 7 Series Announced By Microsoft

February 15, 2010

Microsoft have just announced their re-branding of Windows Mobile; the Windows Phone 7 Series at the 2010 Mobile World Congress, in Barcelona. The name may be a bit of a mouthful, but it’s clear that their new mobile operating system has taken a drastically different approach than previous efforts from Windows Mobile.

Every Windows Phone will have three buttons on the front of it: Start, Search and Back. This consistency will allow for a better experience for the user with hardware and software working together better – it’s a theme that Google’s also been chasing with their Android devices (such as the Nexus One) by encouraging manufacturers to use their 4 button template on the front of their devices, offering consistency across the board. This is definitely a step in the right direction as not only does it allow hardware and software to work better together, but also allows a much easier transition between Windows Phone devices.

Has Microsoft Turned Into The New IBM?

December 30, 2009

Surfing the web today, I came across a very interesting interview on SeattlePi with Don Dodge, who was Microsoft’s Director of Business Development for the Emerging Business Team until getting laid off last month. During the interview, he revealed his opinions on Microsoft, their current situation and where they’re heading. He also revealed that he thinks “Microsoft is a lot like IBM was in 1985”, going on to say that “after 20 years they are losing the innovation edge.” This got me thinking; has Microsoft lost the ability to innovate after being the most dominative force in computing since the late 1980’s? And if so, why?

I think a key to the solution is the sheer amount of things Microsoft does. When you think of the number of markets Microsoft compete in, you can understand that it’s extremely difficult, maybe impossible, to dominate every market. Not only do Microsoft develop and maintain the Windows OS, they also compete in the market for smart phones with Windows Mobile; the gaming market with the Xbox 360 and internet search with Bing.

Google To Lose Murdoch’s Newspapers To Microsoft’s Bing Search Engine?

November 24, 2009

google-bing-logosEver since the induction of Bing by Microsoft, they have been clear of their intentions to overthrow Google as the kingpin of search engines. But now the rivalry is stepping up another gear due to one Rupert Murdoch, Head of News Corp. Which is responsible for perhaps most notably in the UK, the Times and the Sun newspapers which in recent years have expanded their empire to the world wide web raking in 10% of their revenue from the Internet.

It is the Internet of course, which has sparked this latest debate between Murdoch and giants Google as he revealed plans to block Google searches from displaying any of his news articles. He claims it is not legal for search engines to display his articles and headlines as ‘news’.

Bing TV Advert

June 18, 2009

bing-logoMicrosoft recently re-launched their search engine business with their Bing “decision engine” which they’re hoping will start to make dent into Google’s current overwhelming market share – Bing is already more popular than Yahoo!

Although you can use Bing wherever you are in the world, some of the main features are only being targeted towards the US-based users to begin with and as such Microsoft have been running a Bing TV advert on some of the American TV networks.

Bing Search Engine More Popular Than Yahoo?

June 9, 2009

bing-logoThe top three search engine websites over the last few years have been fairly consistent – Google have been out in the lead with Yahoo and MSN trailing quite a way behind, not that they haven’t been trying to make up some of the ground between them.

Recently we had Ask’s attempt to claw back market share with the re-introduction of Ask Jeeves (which as of yet hasn’t done anything remarkable) and now its Microsoft’s turn to revamp the search engine that has so far been only semi-successful: Live search has now become Bing.
