5 Top & Best Netbooks For Christmas/Winter 2009/2010

December 8, 2009

Since the release of the Intel Atom processor in 2008, we have seen a huge growth in demand for netbooks. There are now so many different models of netbook it’s almost impossible to know where to start. It seems that generally, most netbooks so far contain the Atom, clocked at 1.6GHz with just 1Gb of RAM. This is perfectly adequate for running a basic Linux OS, Windows XP or now Windows 7 at a push and performing simple tasks such as web browsing and managing email which was the original intention of the netbook.

The idea of the netbook is to provide users with an uber-portable method of simple computing, although there might be some confusion among customers of the difference between a netbook and a laptop. The lightweight devices generally range from 8.9” to 11” or 12”. Of course, by saving space, you sacrifice several things such as an optical drive and to a great extent, performance. But the best netbooks were never intended for power hungry tasks such as gaming or intensive video processing.

Anyway, if you’re looking to bag one of these this Christmas/Winter you may want to check this list of which netbooks we think are worth taking a closer look at.

Zotac MAG PC To Mount Your Monitor Around The House!

October 9, 2009

zotac-mag-pcAs more an people start using computers and we see more of them springing up across the house (you may within the next few years have separate ones in your kitchen, lounge, bedroom etc) the issues of size and energy efficiency as well as the all important and already prevalent performance and cost come into play.

Hoping to solve these problems is the MAG PC from Zotac which aims to deliver good performance whilst being small enough to be placed anywhere around the house – 186mm x 189mm x 38mm is just the right size to be suitably discreet (much like a Mac-Mini), but this can even be mounted to the back on the monitor that it’s attached to.

Acer Android-Based Smartphone and Netbook Announced

June 4, 2009

acer-logoLast month we had a good look at the HTC Magic, and although it was a decent phone in its own right the most noticeable thing about it was the fact that it was the first phone (after the poor T-mobile G1) to use the open source and much admired Android operating system.

However not wanting to feel left behind Acer have finally got round to officially announcing what most of us have suspected for a while – that they will be releasing an Android base in Q4 2009. But not only that – they’ve also said that they will be releasing an Android netbook in Q3 2009. After their much anticipated but arguably lack-lustre entrance into the smartphone market earlier this year Acer really needed to make a name for itself within the market, and this is definitely one way to do it!

Asus Eee PC 1000HE Announced

February 10, 2009

asus-eee-pc-1000heEvery so often we see a new version of the Asus Eee PC appear (all being members of the 700, 900 or 1000 series, in this case the latter) and more often than not they do not make much of an impact on the netbook world. So when Asus announced the 1000HE a couple of days ago many questions were asked as to whether it would be any improvement on what has already been done – is it more than just an extra vowel?

From what we found out at the CES in Las Vegas we know that it will have a brand new keyboard and an improved battery all of which hope to improve in areas where the Eee PC has not previously performed as well as it could have.

January 18, 2009

sony-netbook-vaio-p-seriesAs you may have read already, netbooks are a big thing and they are attracting some of the biggest names. However Sony have been conspicuous by their absence and there has been much talk as to what is going on behind the walls of Sony HQ, most of it under the assumption that they are planning a venture into the packed netbook market.

So come CES 2009 many people were very excited at the prospect of a Sony Netbook and as they crammed round the stall they got a view of something very interesting. The Sony Vaio P-series, a product which follows the successful line of Vaio products renowned for their quality, and the letter P almost definitely standing for portable. But why the confusion? Well read on!
