Lavasoft Ad-Aware Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware Review
December 22, 2009
All the way back in October we brought you the news of the release of the refreshed line up of Lavasoft’s flagship security software: Ad-Aware Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware and now two months later we’re back to have a look at how it’s fared and whether or not the new versions deserve the reputation that the brand has gained over the last few years.
So why two months? Yes it is quite a while but one of the (if not the) most important aspects of AV software is its ability to adapt to new threats and over this time we’ve seen a whole host of new problems arise – so can even the Free version of Ad-Aware cope?

You’re not going to like it…
Just as I said I would, I wanted to test out whether Windows is virus proof and this is how I’ve done it!
I’ve been putting Windows on my PCs from an OEM or VLA disc for so long, that I’ve apparently forgotten what it’s like to buy a new Windows computer from scratch. Well let me tell you now, it’s horrible! Windows has the reputation of crashing, getting infected with crap and generally screwing up without human help for one reason, and one reason alone. It’s the freakin’ OEMs.
Do you know what happens when you buy a new Windows PC?
This happens…

“It is impossible to install, execute, or enable a virus in Windows unless, against the clear advice of the operating system, you explicitly choose to do so. Windows is virus-proof.”
Hmm, that’s quite a bold statement isn’t it? I mean, you’d have to be some sort of deluded “fan-boy” to actually believe a statement like that, right?
Maybe.
I intend to install Microsoft Security Essentials on a test machine with an isolated internet connection, and then do my level best to fuck it up. What do I mean by this? I will visit every dodgy web site, try a “test-scan” of every Win-Antivirus out there, and absolutely yes, please do show me Angelina Jolie in a compromising situation. Want my email address? Well, it’s right here:

May 5, 2009
Virus protection and Internet security is one of those things which is one of those things which we all know we should do something about, but many of us don’t do it or at least not very well – in fact this was on of the areas we first covered here at Zath when we wrote about stopping viruses, spyware and adware…aka being able to use your pc again!
With that in mind, I thought that this latest competition might prove useful to plenty of you out there!
Symantec have kindly given Zath ten copies of the latest version of their Norton Internet Security suite which rather than just being a simple anti-virus product like many programs out there, it features a whole host of protection for your Windows computer including:

The Cornucopia of Crap
Most file sharers are at least one of the following: Haplessly ignorant, idiots, con-artists, trolls, kids, liars, careless, uneducated, and yes, criminals. I really couldn’t care less about any of this, except that it really does directly relate to the quality of their output.
Now as I type this, I can almost feel the indignation of countless file-sharers out there who successfully download many acceptable pirate copies of all and sundry. If that’s you, I would suggest that PC run-time is not a factor for you and you’re not very discerning over quality and consistency. You also either really know what you’re doing, or you’re just plain lucky. Let me make it clear here: unless you absolutely know what it is you’re downloading, there is no virus protection or malware prevention tool in existence which will guarantee protection when you open the file.

December 3, 2008
ESET have announced that they will be a releasing a mobile phone antivirus software application in January 2009.
ESET are the producers of one of the best antivirus (NOD32) and security suites (ESET Smart Security suite) currently available – I’ve personally been using their NOD32 software for over 4 years and have recommended it to many people over the years. One of the best things about it is that it combines good protection while taking up small amounts of resources, so your computer isn’t noticeably slowed down by it.
When I begin using a new computer or set up a new Windows installation, installing a form of anti-virus software on it is one of the first things I do, if not the first thing! Will people want to have to do this with their mobile phones? Or perhaps the handsets will come pre-installed with mobile versions of antivirus applications – I’m not sure if this would be a good thing or a bad thing!

March 16, 2007
I often get people asking about how to stop them getting viruses, spyware, adware (aka being able to actually use their pc again) and other junk being installed onto your PC, so I’m outlining a list of some useful information here that should help before you even need to run a Free Adware Remover.
1. First of all, be very careful about you actually install onto your PC in terms of programs. For instance, I would recommend you NEVER install any of those Peer-to-Peer (P2P) programs such as Kazaa, WinMX etc. that you can download music and other stuff off – they always contain loads of hidden spyware that will get installed onto your PC – if you want to go down the P2P route, I’d suggest using BitTorrent programs such as uTorrent.
