Zath’s Technology & Gadget Roundup (20/02/2010)

It’s the end of another week in the online world of hi-tech gadgets and technology blogging and as usual there’s been a lot happening out there, so here’s a quick roundup of some of the stuff that we’ve found particularly interesting this week, let us know what you think to them too!

Linux Training Week on Zath – I’m sure we’ve all heard of Linux, but for me personally it’s not something I’ve ever seriously looked at because I always assumed it wasn’t worth the hassle of installation for something that wasn’t that worthwhile, well clearly I was wrong on that one! As you can see from this useful series of articles about the Ubuntu distribution of Linux – it’s easy to setup Ubuntu, it’s an easy to use the Ubuntu interface and there’s lots of software available for Linux.

Heineken Beer-Serving Robot of the Future – oh yes that’s right, in the future we won’t need to get up from the comfort of the sofa, instead the robots will bring the beer to us! This particular robot makes for a great novelty, but it does make you wonder about the potential of robots in the future.

Buy Walkie Talkie Watches? – admittedly walkie talkies aren’t exactly hi-tech these days or even that wanted by people now we all have modern mobile phones such as the iPhone 3GS and Nexus One, but these particular ones can be strapped on your wrist and would make for great free-to-use communication devices if you like to be out in the great outdoors or perhaps having a multi-car roadtrip given they have a range of up to 5km. I just wish I had some of these back when I was a kid!

Zath’s Technology & Gadget Roundup (12/02/2010)

Well it’s the end of another week and as always there’s been a lot going on in the world of technology and hi-tech gadgets, luckily some of our favourite websites have not let us down as they’ve covered some of them this week, here’s some of the stories that we liked most, along with a few of our favourites from Zath and the thoughts that come to mind from reading them!

O2 Testing 4G Mobile Broadband Network in the UK – the one thing that puts me off buying a mobile broadband device right now is the fact that I see such variable coverage and often poor download speeds when using my mobile phone, so news that we could be approaching a time of 4G mobile broadband coverage which would see much faster browsing and download speeds is a very promising thing, although I’m guessing it’s still a few years off just yet, so I’ll probably end up using the 3 Mobile Broadband voucher code to save £54 afterall, but there’s hope for the future!

Buy Amazon Kindle DX In UK & Europe!

First there was the Kindle which became the first mainstream ebook reader when released over in America, this was followed by the Kindle 2 which boasted a whole series of improvements and which finally made it across the Atlantic to us wannabe Kindle 2 users in the UK and Europe.

Amazon also released the larger Amazon Kindle DX, again initially it was only available to those in America, however you can now buy a Kindle DX in the UK and Europe too!

But first a quick overview of the Kindle DX which was revealed to the American market all the way back in May last year. It’s got a 9.7” screen which uses the same digital e-ink technology that has made the Kindle 2 (6″ screen) so popular as it allows the text to be read in the same way as paper making it a lot easier on the eyes than staring at a backlit LCD screen which can perhaps tire your eyes with extended sessions of use.

I have the pleasure in announcing that the Amazon Kindle DX (as featured here on Zath recently) has been voted as being the Coolest Gadget of the Week by the readers of the Coolest Gadgets website!

‘Coolest Gadget of the Week‘ is as the name suggests is the voting of the best gadget or piece of technology by the Coolest Gadgets readers – these people obviously know their gadgets, so it’s rather cool to see Zath’s latest submission winning out of the selection of gadgets on show last week! This is the first time we’ve won, so thanks very much to Coolest Gadgets and to everyone who voted!

Amazon Kindle DX Revealed

What do you do when you’ve made the leading product in the market, you’re onto your second version and you’ve sold an estimated 500,000 units? Make it bigger of course – and that is what Amazon have done with the Kindle DX which was released this week.

Back in February we saw the release of the Amazon Kindle 2 and now it’s back, with an extra 3.7” of screen size, a host of extra features, and a load more publishing partnerships that promise to widen the range of texts available on the Kindle.

So, what makes this different from the previous Kindle? Well the most obvious thing is that it is a significant amount bigger (9.7” as opposed to 6”) which makes using it a lot more practical: you need to turn the page less which is an advantage if you’re just skimming through, you can have bigger text and it’s better for sharing with other people.
