iPhone 3GS Upgrade Cost Farce
June 9, 2009
So, the eagerly anticipated new iPhone 3GS release happened last night (well, BST anyway) and my, wasn’t everyone a little peeved! Although I spent most of my time chuckling at the hordes of people infecting my Twitter account with talk of the same damn thing, I found solace in knowing that none of it affected me. I have avoided the iPhone so far, but in the last few months have really had urges to own one.
It turns out that O2 aren’t happy with their ridiculous monopoly over the iPhone and want to still charge their loyal customers hundreds of pounds to upgrade to the shiny new 3rd generation toy. You know what means, right? Yep – Twitter has been overrun once again with complaints from all sides of the UK.

Later today at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) we should hopefully be finding out more from Apple about their 3rd generation iPhone, what it will look like design-wise, what specifications/features it will have and a definitive release date of when we can expect to be able to buy one and start playing with it for ourselves.
However, before that official announcement we thought it might be good to take a quick look back at some of the rumoured features that we’ve reported on in recent months.

May 20, 2009
We’ve been following several third generation iPhone rumours for the past few months as like everyone, we’re very keen to see what Apple might have up its sleeve for the next iteration of its successful smartphone.
Engadget has reported on a rumour that it has picked up on via the Wired website saying that the third generation iPhone will feature an OLED display, which would tie in with a rumour that we’ve already reported, it will have a matte black rear casing (without the metal band around the edge of the iPhone which I’d be quite pleased with), a glowing Apple logo similar to on MacBooks (not sure on that one – would that not waste of precious battery power?) and perhaps most importantly a release date of 17th July 2009 which wouldn’t be long after the Palm Pre.

One of Apple’s latest patents that has recently emerged would suggest some interesting features in an upcoming Apple product, one which could end up being the 3rd generation iPhone.
As you can see from the technical patent image below, there is a front-facing camera detailed at the top-centre of the device (the item labelled 180) which would bring the more business-focussed uses to the iPhone such as video calling – the only real instance right now that I can see people using video calling – I don’t know anyone who uses it for leisure purposes due to the 3G requirements and associated costs, is it something that you’ve used on mobile phones in the past? No doubt that this will become a commonly used application as the technology develops.

April 6, 2009
We recently reported about the new iPhone 3.0 software that Apple are planning to launch later in the year for existing iPhone/iPod Touch owners and also for a rumoured new 3rd generation iPhone, which from looking into the development specification of the iPhone 3.0 beta software, people are perhaps getting a sneak peek at what can be expected from the next iPhone product.
Wireless radio component specifications contained with the iPhone 3.0 beta software would indicate support for a new Wireless/Bluetooth chip model – the newer and faster Broadcom BCM4329 chip instead of the older BCM4325 found in the iPhone 3G. This would add support for the 802.11n standard and would mean there’d be several benefits to the 3rd generation iPhone.

March 24, 2009
Last week we reported about the rumour that the next generation iPhone could feature an OLED screen and after that I thought we might not have to wait that long for more news (well rumour) and we haven’t!
Apparently somebody fairly high up at AT&T in America has made the following comments about the upcoming next generation iPhone – I wonder if these will turn out to be true?
What particularly interests me about these snippets of information is whether the new iPhone will actually compete with the high-end productivity devices (such as a Blackberry?), would Apple ever include a slide out QWERTY keyboard on an iPhone?

With the recent announcement of the iPhone 3.0 software, many people are now starting to speculate as to whether the release of the next 3rd generation of iPhone will be coming sometime in 2009 to co-incide with this software update release much like the iPhone 3G did with the iPhone 2.0 software update.
Also given the upcoming release this year of the Palm Pre which could possibly be the iPhone’s strongest competitor to date, it would make sense for Apple to address this new threat to their dominance with not only a software update, but a new handset featuring improved hardware features.
