Super Mario Galaxy 2 Fail?

If you’re looking for awesomeness with this next installment of Super Mario Galaxy you may be in for a slight… okay, perhaps, epic disappointment. Miyamoto has recently revealed his plans for the new game saying, “I’ve always felt that the Mario games themselves aren’t particularly suited to having a very heavy story.” With this, he goes on to describe the simplicity of the games, which remind us why the game is so popular in the first place.

He, instead, preferred that the game took an easy approach to the 3D platform game criticising the earlier design. Miyamoto has claimed that he’s faced a little backlash from within the Nintendo team over his decision; “They always want to have these dramatic scenes where Princess Peach gets kidnapped, but I always tell them, no, it’s fine – Princess Peach likes cake, so you can just have them use cake as bait to kidnap Princess Peach, and that’s enough.” I’m glad these are the things that are being quibbled inside the Nintendo offices. God forbid they actually do any work.

Just kidding.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 was revealed at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo last month, citing itself as the first time a second full-3D Mario platform title that has been made for a single Nintendo console. The all-new version is said to have over 90% of new levels and final 10% being those that you’ve seen before but with new objectives. The game is said to be quite far along in its development, but the release date was held back due to the new Super Mario Bros. Wii being released later this year.

The new game has some great game play, including Mario’s ability to ride around on Yoshi – with his tongue being able to be used to jump over spaces and eat fruits. There’ll also be a return of that brilliantly masterminded bumblebee suit, of which I am a very big fan.

I have faith that the game will excite us. In Nintendo we trust.
