Super Mario Bros Wii Preview

super-mario-bros-wiiAs if the news of Super Mario Galaxy 2 wasn’t enough, we’re in for another dose of Mario’s magic with New Super Mario Bros Wii.

The game looks very similar to New Super Mario Bros. which was released on the Nintendo DS, but there have been a few modifications. It’s still the classic side scrolling game that made Mario the icon he is today.

You can play the game in single player mode if you want, or you can go nuts with your mates and play multiplayer with up to 3 more players. From the videos, you can see that when playing multiplayer, when you hit a box, you’ll get 4 mushrooms. One for each of the players, if you want to share nicely that is.

You can use the multiplayer to you advantage and help each other along the way to find new hidden areas, or you can simply use them as your own weapon by picking them up. You can even throw them into a pit if you’re feeling evil enough.

There’s a new item called the Propeller Suit which will allow you to fly up in the sky briefly by shaking the Wii Remote, which will come in quite handy should you find yourself falling down a pit! You’ll then float back down to the ground.

Playing multiplayer on a side scroller could get quite hectic, and it’s good to see they’ve thought about this, as the camera pans out when you have got 4 players on screen, but should you lag behind and fall of screen, then you lose a life. When you lose a life, you’ll come back in a bubble and it’s up to the other players on screen as to whether they release you from the bubble or not.

As for pipes, if one player goes down, then you all go down where you can fight over who gets all the coins. The whole aspect of the multiplayer in a side scrolling Mario sounds and looks like great fun. At the end of each level is a flag and as soon as the first player reaches it, the others have 3 seconds to reach it to get themselves some more bonus points.

After everyone has made it to the end, a scoreboard comes up and ranks all the players to give the game a little bit more competition.

I thought New Super Mario Bros was awesome and I can’t wait to play New Super Mario Bros Wii, especially the multiplayer mode. With a release date set for this Christmas, get writing to Santa now, so he can pre-order you a copy!
