‘Star Wars: The Old Republic’ MMO Game Announced

Lucasarts have announced that they are developing a new massively multiplayer online (MMO) game based on the ‘Old Republic’ called “Star Wars: The Old Republic”.

The Old Republic was referred a few times during the movies, so most general viewers probably have no idea what this will involve, however if you’ve played either of the two “Knights of the Old Republic” (KOTOR) games then you’ll probably know the kind of society, environment, types of characters to expect in this period of the Star Wars history which is set thousands of years before Obi Wan and the Skywalkers.

When I first played Knights of the Old Republic (which is one of the best single player RPG games you can play in my opinion), I just wanted to see George Lucas base a trilogy of films in this universe as Bioware had created a game so rich in content – plus the actual story was probably better than that found in the Star Wars prequel movies. To hear that not only is a MMO game begin made around the Old Republic, but that game will also be made by Bioware, I’m definitely a lot more hopeful that this game will deliver on all levels unlike the previous Lucasarts MMO attempt of Star Wars: Galaxies.

This will perhaps be the perfect Star Wars setting to allow for people to be either a Jedi or a Sith as in this time frame, the universe is populated by lots of ‘bad Jedi’ so to speak since the Sith Empire are just as open a group/power as the Order of the Jedi. Which will you choose to be?

As a player you’ll also have a companion, pet or droid to accompany you on your journey, to fight alongside you and perhaps betray you, depending upon how you treat them, this should certainly add to the story-driven elements which this game should hopefully deliver in large quantities as Bioware look to expand on this universe!

The early Old Republic screenshots on the website seem to show that the graphics will be quite stylised (somewhat like World of Warcraft graphics) which suggests to me that they are certainly targeting a mass-market of customers, not just those who have the top-end PC systems, could they really rival WoW? What do you think the style of graphics that we’ve seen so far of Star Wars: The Old Republic?

I think Lucasarts have really done the right thing in asking Bioware to develop an MMO based on the Old Republic which may have a chance of becoming a significant ‘force’ in the MMO market in the coming years, perhaps a rival to Blizzard’s next MMO project?
