Star Wars: The Old Republic Trailer

star-wars-the-old-republic-logoThe first Star Wars: The Old Republic trailer was unveiled at E3 2009, it’s cinematic in nature and is presumably the setting the scene for what will be the scenario in which the game takes place.

It was late last year that Star Wars: The Old Republic was announced by Lucasarts and Bioware as a new massively multiplayer online (MMO) game that would be set in the distant past of the Old Republic thousands of years before the time of the Star Wars movies and the events that most people are familiar with, except of course for those of us who have played the Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR) games in the past.

Lucasarts had tried the MMO-style game before with Star Wars: Galaxies, however that kind of lost it’s way in that to begin with it took players a long time to become a Jedi character (and therefore on rare occasion when you saw one, it really meant something), as the game developed, becoming a Jedi was made much easier and then everybody ended up with one of those characters and it just didn’t fit with the feel of the game and many people left the game – they then no doubt ended up playing World of Warcraft.

Anyway, clearly by setting an MMO in this period in the history of Star Wars where they’re lots of Jedi and Sith running around fighting each other, then at least it is more plausible. But again the question remains, isn’t everyone just going to choose to be a Jedi or Sith character from the start? Who will choose to be a trooper or droid character instead of the iconic, more ‘fun’ characters?

What do you think to this concept for a Star Wars MMO game? Will it be the game to better World of Warcraft and be the next place for online gamers to go to – I mean who doesn’t want to “use the force” and this Star Wars: The Old Republic trailer certainly looks rather cool seeing large numbers of Jedi and Sith battling it out rather than the cloak and dagger style of the recent Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, but can Bioware’s new MMO game have the depth and variety to keep people hooked?
