Spotify News Roundup – A Music Service Streaming Ahead!
As I’m sure you’ve noticed that in the last 8 months (since our original post back in January on not needing Spotify beta invites in the UK) that the ‘free’ music service Spotify has been popping up pretty frequently here on Zath as its popularity increases and the company goes from strength to strength.
So as you can imagine even within the last week there have been quite a few movements forward in the world of ‘Spotify’, so we thought we should bring them all together for both Spotify lovers and virgins alike in one special post: so here it is, and I think it makes sense to go in chronological order!
1. Firstly, and a nice piece of inter-subject news, we’ll have a look at the newest member of the ‘board’ at Spotify and that is Mr Li Ka-Shing. Admittedly this Asian investor may not be a household name, and neither is the company ‘Hutchinson Whampoa’ which he is the chairman of, but I’m sure nearly all of you will have heard of the network ‘3′ and the phone manufacturer INQ (who’s new INQ handset releases we covered recently) and that is what makes him particularly interesting in this context.
We already know that INQ pride themselves on offering easy to use Facebook, Twitter and other features, but this development could well mean that we will be seeing Spotify on the new INQ phones which will undoubtedly make them a lot more attractive to free music lovers.
2. Having said that it is not just the offer of free music that attracts people – some also choose to go for the premium options and part with a little money. However they will be a little saddened to know that the limited-time special offer of £100 for the annual subscription has been superseded by a £120 price tag that will bring it in line with the £9.99 monthly fee. Although this may sound fair enough Spotify also justified this rise by the promise of new ’special features’ which we should be seeing in the next month; unfortunately we don’t know exactly what this entails but we shall find out soon!

3. And whilst we’re on the subject of finances a very interesting fact from Universal Music – and that is that Spotify actually earns them more money (through more people listening and thus more money from advertising) than even iTunes, that is how successful the much critisised business model is. This news will only make it more popular with other music labels and artists, making a bigger catalog and boosting its popularity even more – things are really looking up for this company ever since Spotify was officially declared an official legal music service.
4. Finally an update on the preview we had on the Spotify iPhone app, and that is that Apple have (to the joy of many) accepted the app, and that hopefully it will be available shortly – great news for both Spotify and its users. So that’s a roundup of Spotify news, but I think that given how quickly it has ‘exploded’ onto the scene this’ll be far from the last time we report on positive news from this online music service!
