Sony Working On New Playstation / PSP 2 Hardware?

It’s been confirmed that Sony are working on a new Playstation concept which was announced by the Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida.
It’s possible that this could be the rumoured new Sony PSP 2 that we mentioned a while back which would seem the more likely option as people expect the Playstation 3 to last for another 4-5 years at least. SCE (Sony Computer Entertainment) filed a trademark called ‘Playview’, with the filing listing a few teasers as to what it could be:
“’Portable electronic device for receiving and reading text and images and sound through wireless Internet access and for displaying electronically published materials, namely, books, journals, newspapers, magazines, multimedia presentations.” with an added “Computer game software recorded on optical discs”.
So does this mean the Sony PSP2 (especially after nothing was announced at E3), if that’s what it is, will be re-introducing the UMD drive to the handheld? The Sony PSP Go was a flop hence the reason for 10 free games being give away with each one, so it’s only right that Sony rectify the issue and come up with something different. No mention of 3D development in there, so if it is the PSP2 it won’t be matching what Nintendo’s new 3DS can do, but it does sound a bit more like it’s perhaps Sony’s answer to the newly released iPhone 4?
I’m intrigued to see some images of this new piece of hardware as from what I’ve read I do think it’s going to be the iPhone’s new competition rather than going head to head with the 3DS.
What do you make of this news? Do you think it’s going to be the Sony PSP 2? A handheld console? Or a new mobile phone platform to match/beat the iPhone?
