The idea of releasing special/limited editions of products for major film/book/game releases is nothing new (and with the World Cup on the horizon I imagine we’ll see a few to do with that in the future) and whilst the combination of a Sony PSP game and an MP3 player might not be the most obvious one it is what Sony are using to promote the latest release under the ‘Metal Gear Solid’ name.
The new limited edition Metal Gear Solid Sony Walkman in question is a new version of the W252 which is – basically – a wearable MP3 player which is designed for the more active members of the music listening community, which of course is the link that Sony are going for with the connections to the obviously active Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker game.
Before we look at what makes this edition ‘special’ it’s worth just having a look at what your basic Sony Walkman W252 offers you: as I mentioned this MP3 player is very much designed for active users, and this is not only shown in the small ‘wearable’ design but also in the fact that it is wire free and water resistant allowing you to wear it whatever you are doing – within reason (I wouldn’t go swimming with it for example!).
With regards to some of the other specs the W252 doesn’t stand out especially – it has 2GB of space which should be enough if you are conservative with your music choice; it boasts 13.5mm EX Series headphones along with several measures to make it easier to use on the move: a jog level (to easily skip folders), the ability to set up playlists and transfer them to the W252 and ‘ZAPPIN’ technology which (as seen in the Sony Walkman W250) essentially quickly skips through your song playing short samples allowing you to easily select the kind of music you wish to listen to.
It also has the ability to charge to the capacity of up to 90 mins playback from just 3 mins of charging and comes in a staggeringly unsurprising range of three colours: black, white and pink… which brings me nicely onto what makes the new Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker W252 edition special, as the most obvious difference is that this edition comes in a ‘distinctive camouflage finish’.
Finally there are a few in-game benefits that owners of the special edition can reap: a code within the container of the W252 allows you to unlock some of the original designed characters in game, and also “iconic past Walkman models” will appear in game, which you can then collect as collectable items.
So that’s the limited edition W252 (although there is no real explanation as to how ‘limited’ it is, but I think we can trust Sony on that) and it adds that air of individuality and almost exclusivity to an already very good MP3 player. Admittedly if you are not intending to get the game you may want to opt for the more subtle/sleek/bright standard colours, but if you are it is probably worth living with the camouflage colour for the extra in game benefits!
For those of you itching to get at either this special edition of the Sony Walkman W252 (Metal Gear Solid) or in fact the Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker (PSP) game then you will have to wait till next month (June) for it to become available the former of which will be available for £49.99 which is worth noting is no more expensive than the standard model, which is nice!
