Sony PSP2 Rumours?

Rumours have been around since time began, and they have always offered an insight into what may be to come in the future, or what people want to see in the future. Either way they often do have at least a little truth in them, so when the new, latest stories regarding the possibility of the Sony PSP2 started to make the rounds it sparked great amounts of interest.

First let us look at the Sony PSP which has been in the news recently after the spat between Sony and Sony Ericsson over the brand name, and unsurprisingly it relates to technical specifications for the next PSP. It all started when IGN said that they had ‘credible sources’ that claimed the next PSP (for convenience sake coined the PSP 2) would come with a touchscreen similar to that seen in the iPhone.

Admittedly this is all we know about the ‘upcoming’ PSP2 (again according to IGN), but not only would this make sense from Sony’s point of view but it seems to corroborate with other internet sources so I think it is probably more truth than not. Obviously Sony have been denying it profusely and have made no official statement, but a reply from someone close to the company contained more than a hint of sarcasm:

“Clearly, being a quiet time of year, many, what we thought to be credible websites, are making up stories about PSP2, and how it allows you to teleport across the globe, travel through time, and will be powered by the horns of baby rhinoceroses.

“Hopefully, you can sense a mild tone of sarcasm, which should hopefully indicate how ‘on the money’ IGN are. Needless to say, we don’t comment on rumour or speculation, but this is nonsense.”

In fairness Sony should have seen this coming, diehard fans have been waiting for what seems like an age for the new PSP and Sony have been conspicuous by their silence so it is no surprise that interest has mounted. Even the two minor upgrades for the Sony PSP (the PSP 2000 which was mostly improvements on the form factor and the more recent PSP 3000 which had a few extra features including a microphone) have fallen short of expectations.

But these aren’t the only things that people are expecting to see on the new PSP if and when it is released; for a start the brand name argument with Sony Ericsson implied that it will have a phone. But the PSP fan website PSPFanboy.com claim to have got hold of an official survey which indicates many of the things that Sony are supposedly thinking of including in the new PSP2.

Many of the most interesting things on the list seem to be echoes of some of the more popular consumer electronics that have been released in recent years: a touchscreen form the iPhone, a keyboard from the recent boom in smartphones and the ability to read e-books from Sony and Amazon.

So although we cannot say for definite (or in fact with any degree of certainty) that any of these will appear in the new PSP2, that the new PSP2 will be around any time soon or that any of these sources are in any way credible they are still very interesting ideas, and they do give a very good idea of what we can expect to see.

And if they do appear what a product the new Sony PSP2 will be. Offering the ability to play, watch and browse on the move, to read books, to watch TV, to easily play/use through a touch screen, to navigate with ease using the GPS and to come in an array of pretty colours who could say no? It really would be the holy grail of all products, so keep your fingers crossed!
